Developments near Bakhmut

On July 2nd, Sputnik News, citing information from the Russian Ministry of Defense, reported that Russian forces had destroyed a Ukrainian telecommunications station connecting via Starlink satellite and an enemy drone control center near Bakhmut.

Russian troops also repelled a Ukrainian attack near the village of Berkhovka on the outskirts of the city.

Also on this front, the Institute for the Study of War (USA), citing Ukrainian sources, revealed that the Kyiv government's army had launched counterattacks along four areas in Bakhmut, The Kyiv Independent reported.

While acknowledging that Russia has sent reinforcements to the Bakhmut area, the US institute noted that Ukraine's counteroffensive there could force Russia to make the difficult decision of whether to withdraw defensive forces from other fronts to reinforce this area.

Russia has not commented on the above statement.

Meanwhile in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said that Russia launched an attack on the Ukrainian capital city with drones and cruise missiles in the early hours of July 2nd. This was also the first Russian attack on Kyiv in 12 days.

Ukrainian air defense systems successfully shot down all of the enemy's UAVs, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, the Southern Ukraine Operational Command announced that fierce fighting had taken place near the Antonivsky Bridge over the Dnipro River in the Kherson province. Ukrainian forces are attempting to deploy units on the eastern bank of the river but have not yet succeeded.

Conditions for peace talks in Ukraine

At a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Kyiv on July 1, President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined the conditions for peace talks with Russia. These conditions stipulated that Ukraine must regain control of the borders that Kyiv claims are internationally recognized.

These borders include Crimea, Donbass, and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. Russia has not commented on this possibility.

Will negotiations to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict begin in July?

President Zelensky also expressed Ukraine's desire to be admitted as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO has invited Ukraine to participate in the bloc's conference in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, on July 11-12, and President Zelensky is hoping for good news by the time the NATO conference takes place.

In addition, the Ukrainian president continued to warn of the serious danger lurking at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently under Russian control. He accused the Moscow authorities of plotting a localized detonation at the plant. The Kremlin denied this accusation.

Russia cancels Maks air show.

Russia has canceled the Maks international aerospace exhibition, which was scheduled to be held from July 25-30, and decided to postpone it to 2024.

In its latest intelligence report, the UK Ministry of Defence stated that Russia's cancellation of Maks 2023 was due to security concerns following several drone attacks in the country.

F-16 and MiG-29 are in a "different class"

On May 2nd, two drones exploded above the Kremlin, with Moscow authorities claiming the perpetrators were from Ukraine.

In February, Russia said a drone, believed to be Ukrainian, had crashed in the city of Kolomna, about 110 km from central Moscow.

Traditionally, the Maks exhibition has always been held near Moscow, thus raising security concerns if the event proceeds as planned, according to The Guardian , citing an analysis by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The British Ministry of Defence also mentioned the "disappearance" of General Sergei Surovikin, Chief of Staff of the Russian Aerospace Forces and currently Deputy Commander of the Russian Joint Forces participating in the military operation in Ukraine.

The last time General Surovikin appeared in public was before the Wagner mercenary forces staged a rebellion on June 24.

Russia has rejected Western speculation regarding the absence of General Surovikin.

The US is considering sending long-range missiles to Ukraine.
