Model of multi-cropping

The stories of farmers who dare to abandon old farming methods and seek new directions are always valuable examples. In Tan Xuyen village, Khe Sanh commune, Phan Thanh, an active member, is known by many as a "self-taught engineer."

Mr. Thanh's life has been closely intertwined with coffee, the main crop in Khe Sanh. However, after many years of continuous cultivation, his family's coffee plantation gradually aged, the soil became depleted, leading to decreased productivity and economic efficiency. With his diligent observation skills and concern for maximizing the advantages of the land, Mr. Thanh restructured his entire production area towards a diversified farming model. He retained more than 1 hectare of well-developed coffee plants and focused on investing in advanced techniques and care.

Thanks to systematic investment, in recent years, the coffee plantation has maintained a stable yield of 15-17 tons per harvest, bringing Mr. Thanh's family an income of approximately 220 million VND per year. On the remaining land, he converted a portion to growing ginger. With just 2 sao (approximately 2000 square meters) of ginger, he harvests about 5-6 tons of product per harvest, with a profit of about 70 million VND after deducting expenses. In addition, Mr. Thanh also grows taro and combines it with raising goats and pigs to increase his income.

Thanks to flexible and appropriate production methods, Mr. Thanh's family earns over 300 million VND annually. Mr. Thanh shared: “This has been a stable source of income for many years, preventing my family from being completely dependent on a single crop. In particular, crop rotation allows us to regularly improve the soil, increasing the value per unit area.” What makes Mr. Thanh's exemplary production model valuable is not only the economic profit but also the sense of responsibility and sharing of experience with the community. During peak harvest or crop care seasons, his family provides seasonal employment for more than 10 local laborers, with incomes ranging from 200,000 to 400,000 VND per day per person.

A solid support system for highland farmers.

Understanding the difficulties and concerns of its members, the Khe Sanh Commune Farmers' Association has actively implemented many strategic solutions in recent times, guiding people to develop agriculture in a sustainable direction, shifting the focus from quantity to quality. “We consider accompanying and providing initial support to farmers as a key task. The Association has closely coordinated with the Social Policy Bank, creating all conditions for farmer members to access preferential capital, helping them have the ‘fishing rod’ to escape poverty sustainably,” emphasized Dinh Truong Hung, Chairman of the Khe Sanh Commune Farmers' Association.

During the period of 2023-2025, especially after the administrative unit merger, the production mindset of the people of Khe Sanh has undergone a strong transformation. Unlike traditional farming methods, the movement "Farmers competing in excellent production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty" launched by the commune's Farmers' Association has truly been a breath of fresh air and a major driving force helping people rise in economic development.

Overcoming challenges related to weather, diseases, and agricultural product prices, farmer association members have demonstrated a spirit of daring to think and act, boldly investing in transforming their economic models. As a result, the quality of the movement has significantly improved. To date, the commune has 6 households that have achieved the title of excellent producers and business owners at the central level; and 17 households that have achieved the title of excellent producers and business owners at the provincial level. Not limited to traditional pepper and coffee cultivation, many members have invested in high-value economic models such as goat farming, reishi mushroom cultivation, and frog and cricket farms. Currently, the commune has 180 farmer households meeting the criteria for excellent producers and business owners at various levels, and the commune's Farmers' Association has directly helped at least one household escape poverty each year.

Chairman of the Khe Sanh Commune Farmers' Association, Dinh Truong Hung, further affirmed: “We will focus on replanting Khe Sanh coffee trees organically, building the historical brand “Khe Sanh Coffee - 100-Year Heritage” (1926-2026), and supporting people in developing OCOP products. To build a strong and comprehensive association, we are mobilizing members to implement the “3 pioneers,” including: pioneering poverty alleviation and wealth creation; pioneering the building of civilized farmers; and pioneering green, sustainable production and digital transformation.”

To help farmer members realize their wealth-building ideas, the Khe Sanh Commune Farmers' Association has implemented a comprehensive set of support solutions, including: closely coordinating with banks to help members access preferential capital; organizing dozens of training courses on production and business knowledge, and transferring scientific and technical knowledge to over 800 members; guiding 730 members to install and access the Vietnam Farmers' digital platform, helping them access market information and new technologies quickly and transparently; proactively "joining hands" with reputable purchasing agents, systematically connecting products from farms to the market, committing to stable and fair prices, helping farmers feel secure in expanding production.

With the comprehensive support of the farmers' association and the attention and investment of the State, farmers in Khe Sanh are becoming increasingly stable on the red basalt soil. Together, they are realizing the goal of sustainable poverty reduction, striving to become wealthy, and contributing to building a civilized and modern new rural area.
