Mr. Tran Vu Thanh - Director of Dat To Star Eco ecological cooperative, introduces products made from areca palm sheaths.

In many rural areas, the betel palm tree is a familiar sight in every garden. After each shedding season, the old betel palm sheaths often fall to the ground, mostly being burned or naturally decomposed. Recognizing this abundant but underutilized resource, Mr. Tran Vu Thanh - Director of the Star Eco Ecological Cooperative, chose to transform betel palm sheaths into environmentally friendly products.

Mr. Thanh shared: "To create a high-quality product, the raw material selection process is very strict. Not all areca palm sheaths can be used in production. Those that meet the requirements must retain their natural color, be free from mold, not be discolored, and have the appropriate thickness. After cleaning with high-pressure water, the material is treated to remove moisture, heat-pressed using various molds, and then sterilized with UV rays before packaging."

The entire process is controlled according to ISO 22000:2018 standards, from raw materials to the final product.

Currently, Star Eco has developed approximately 20 product lines, including bowls, plates, trays, food containers, and many other household products. A special feature is that the entire production process does not use any chemical dyes or harmful additives. Each product retains the natural grain patterns of the areca palm, making it both rustic and safe for health. Unlike plastic or styrofoam containers, the products are biodegradable after about 45 days in the environment, contributing to a reduction in non-biodegradable waste.

Household items are made from bamboo.

With a production capacity of 7,000-8,000 products per day, many items are consumed in restaurants and food processing facilities domestically and are gradually being exported to the US and some Southeast Asian countries. The cooperative also creates stable jobs for many rural workers and plans to increase its capacity to approximately 24,000 products per day. Beyond production, Star Eco has also become an experiential destination for many student groups and international visitors, contributing to spreading the message of reducing plastic waste, protecting the environment, and developing a circular economy.

Products made from thatch grass.

Besides producing eco-friendly products from palm leaves, bamboo and rattan products manufactured by businesses and cooperatives in the province are gradually replacing plastic straws, chopsticks, and eating utensils in many restaurants, hotels, tourist areas, and cafes, following the green consumption trend. With the advantage of being reusable multiple times or biodegradable after their lifespan, bamboo and rattan products not only contribute to reducing plastic waste but also enhance the value of local raw materials.

Products from the Xóm Bui traditional rattan and bamboo weaving cooperative in Nhân Nghĩa commune were showcased at the Hùng Temple.

In the communes of Muong Bi, Tan Lac, Toan Thang, Thuong Coc, etc., many women's association members, with their ingenuity, have developed handicrafts from thatch grass – a plant that grows naturally on hillsides – to create products for export to the United States, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, France, and China. From bundles of thatch grass that would seemingly only be used for roofing, the workers create storage baskets, lampshades, bird nests, toys, and many interior decorative items.

The green consumer trend is opening up great opportunities for environmentally friendly products. However, according to many businesses and cooperatives, the biggest challenge currently remains the higher cost of these products compared to single-use plastics, while a segment of consumers still prioritize cost-effectiveness.

Unique

Nevertheless, as regulations restricting plastic waste become stricter and public awareness increases, products made from palm leaves, bamboo, thatch, and other natural materials are gradually establishing their place in the market.

These models not only create economic value but also contribute to the formation of a supply chain from raw material collection, production, consumption to community education on environmental protection. The palm sheaths under the garden, bamboo stalks in the bushes, or cogon grass on the mountainside are no longer waste products but have become valuable products, contributing to the development of a green economy, a circular economy, and sustainable development.

Using simple materials from the countryside, businesses and cooperatives are demonstrating that, by combining innovative thinking with technology and modern consumer trends, each green product not only replaces a plastic item but also contributes to a solution for environmental protection, creates livelihoods for people, and enhances the value of local resources in the journey towards a sustainable future.
