Replacing plastic bottles is a commitment.
The grounds of the Phu Quy Special Economic Zone's Comprehensive Service Center have been bustling with children in recent days. The "Exchange Plastic Bottles for Books" program, part of a series of activities organized by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and related units, has been like a grand festival on the small island.
In just three days (June 11-13), nearly 1,500 plastic bottles were collected by students and exchanged for books, comic books, and pens. Sun-tanned children, their small feet accompanying their parents to the exchange point, carrying bags of plastic bottles collected from the beach, corners of houses, or small alleyways, made the area even more lively.

Nguyen Thi My Ngoc, a fourth-grade student at Ngu Phung Primary School, shared: “During the summer, I often spend a lot of time reading books, stories, and study guides because I love reading. Besides that, I also help my parents with household chores.”
Do Tung Lam, a fourth-grade student at Tam Thanh 1 Primary School, happily shared that he exchanged plastic bottles for books and pens to prepare for the new school year. According to Lam, what delighted him was not only receiving useful items but also contributing to maintaining a green, clean, and beautiful environment for his island homeland.
To encourage students to participate in this extracurricular activity, teachers at the school regularly remind students to dispose of trash properly and maintain environmental hygiene at home and in their neighborhoods. Although a small gesture, it has created enthusiasm and enjoyment for the students.

Cultivate green awareness through small actions.
Even after the program concluded, many students continued to bring plastic bottles to exchange for books. Every action and eager glance from the children throughout the activity left a lasting impression on the organizers.

Mr. Nguyen Quy Duc, Deputy Director of the Provincial Library, said: “During the book exhibition in Phu Quy Special Economic Zone, with over 1,000 books on display, we organized many side activities, especially the program of exchanging plastic bottles for books. Surprisingly, the children were more enthusiastic and engaged than expected. This shows that reading culture is still present, whether among adults or children.”
Creating reading spaces and fostering reading habits in children is crucial for cultivating knowledge, self-learning skills, and developing a reading culture.

Thanks to the positive response from students and parents, the "Exchange Plastic Bottles for Books" program has proven effective in spreading a reading culture while raising awareness of environmental protection. Mr. Nguyen Quy Duc hopes that the local authorities will invest in building a new library, equipping it with modern facilities, and creating a more suitable and attractive reading space for students.
Although it only lasted three days, the program left many emotions and fond memories for the students of Phu Quy Special Zone. The joy of receiving their favorite books, pens, and small gifts not only had material value but also became a motivation to ignite a love of reading, creating beautiful memories in their childhood.
On the final afternoon of the program, many children still clutched the books they had exchanged, their eyes shining with joy. The seemingly worthless plastic bottles had been exchanged for knowledge and lessons about environmental protection. From these small actions, seeds of responsibility are being sown on this remote island, contributing to nurturing love for their homeland and an awareness of preserving the greenery of Phu Quy.
