Changes in the Yang Mao New Economic Zone

Forty years ago, hundreds of families from the rice-growing region of Ha Nam (now part of Ninh Binh province) left their homeland to settle in the Yang Mao area (formerly part of Krong Bong district, now Yang Mao commune) to build a new economic zone in accordance with the policies of the Party and the State.

From makeshift houses deep in the forest, this place has now developed into prosperous villages with stable economies and increasingly improved living standards for its people.

The pineapple plantation of over 20 hectares owned by Mr. Hung and Ms. Hang's family generates an income of around 1 billion VND per year.

In 1986 and 1987, nearly 200 households from the communes of Nhan Khang, Hoa Hau, Tien Thang, Nhan Hau, Nhan Tien, etc., in Ly Nhan district, former Ha Nam province (now Ninh Binh province) settled in hamlets 1 and 2 (formerly Cu Dram commune) and Nhan Giang hamlet (formerly Yang Mao commune). In the early days in this new land, difficulties piled up. Production was mainly subsistence farming with crops such as corn, beans, and upland rice; there was no electricity, clean water was scarce, and transportation was difficult.

Mr. Dinh Cong Thang, former Party Secretary and former Chairman of the People's Committee of the former Cu Dram commune, was one of the earliest households to settle there. He recalled: "In the early years, there was almost nothing. Houses were built temporarily with bamboo and reeds, and food had to be carefully rationed for each meal. Malaria was rampant, and many people did not survive. But the people still encouraged each other to stay on the land, believing that life would eventually stabilize."

From those difficult beginnings, under the leadership of the local Party committee and government, and with the efforts of the people, the new economic zone has gradually stabilized and developed. Along with economic development, rural infrastructure has also been invested in comprehensively. The national power grid covers all villages; most roads are paved with concrete or asphalt; schools and cultural centers have been built in a modern style. The grassroots political system is increasingly strengthened. While in 1987 all three villages had only 2 Party organizations with 17 members, today there are 3 Party branches with 59 members, playing a leading role in the commune and the residential area.

In the field of production, the crop structure has undergone a significant transformation. From the initial corn and cassava fields, farmers have boldly developed high-economic-value crops such as coffee, pepper, durian, cocoa, longan, hill pineapple, and red banana, covering a total area of 1,793 hectares.

Many production models generate incomes ranging from hundreds of millions to billions of dong per year. For example, the family of Mr. Tran Van Tham (village 2) earns billions of dong from hill pineapples, acacia trees, and coffee; the family of Ms. Tran Thi Hang (village 1) earns approximately 1 billion dong annually from over 20 hectares of hill pineapples; the families of Mr. Dinh Van Long and Mr. Tran Duc Tam (Nhan Giang village) earn over 500 million dong from coffee, durian, macadamia nuts, and red bananas; and the family of Mr. Tran Duy Tu (village 1) earns nearly 1 billion dong from durian, coffee, and hill pineapple orchards. Currently, there are no more temporary houses in the three villages; many families have built solid houses worth billions of dong, and purchased cars and machinery for production and agricultural product transportation.
