On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd, the General Staff's Cryptography Tunnel, located deep within the Thang Long Imperial Citadel World Heritage Site, officially opened its doors to the public.
The Cryptography Tunnel – a structure closely associated with the General Headquarters of the Vietnam People's Army during the resistance war against the US – offers people the opportunity to directly explore the "underground secrets" of Thang Long Imperial Citadel. This is a special revolutionary relic, an important component in the underground tunnel system of Zone A of Hanoi Ancient Citadel.
Construction began on February 10, 1966, and was completed on June 30 of the same year. The 37.2m² building was designed to provide an absolutely safe workplace for the Cryptography Department of the General Staff.
During the intense years of the war, especially the period from 1972 to 1975, the bunker became a "lifeline of information," ensuring all secret communications, connecting the supreme command with the armed forces and battlefields throughout the country.
Making its public debut, the Cryptography Bunker was reconstructed almost to its original state, combined with the display of valuable artifacts such as: C58 seals, top-urgent seals, highly urgent seals, secret telegrams, coded envelopes, fountain pens, document folders... These are mementos associated with the silent work of cryptography officers and soldiers.
The exhibition space is further enhanced with documentary films, display panels, and audio narration, allowing viewers to feel as if they are transported back to that historical moment, experiencing the tense yet determined atmosphere of those days working underground.
A representative from the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center stated that due to the limited space in the tunnel, visitors will be divided into groups of approximately 10 people each.
Opening the Cryptography Tunnel to visitors not only contributes to paying tribute to our forefathers, but also provides a unique experience, helping the public better understand the special role of the cryptography force in the national liberation struggle.
