The people of Thang Mo commune, a mountainous area, are focusing on developing cattle farming to increase their income. |
Suitable livelihood model
Thang Mo has a mountainous terrain with limited arable land, but it boasts rich natural vegetation, a significant advantage for developing large-scale livestock farming. Recognizing this, the commune has chosen cattle, goat, and pig farming as the focus of its livelihood support projects.
In Sung Phinh B village, formerly the "poverty core" of Thang Mo commune, there are nearly 100 households with over 500 inhabitants, 100% of whom are Mong ethnic people. Previously, the villagers' lives revolved around cultivating corn on rocky soil, with fragmented production dependent on the weather. In recent years, from struggling with poverty, many households have focused on developing livestock farming and proactively managing production to maintain stable incomes. People have begun to learn from each other, looking to successful examples to follow.
The family of Mr. Cử Mí Lùng, in Sủng Phính B village, is one of the households benefiting from the National Target Program's funding. Recently, he received support in the form of a breeding cow. Thanks to proactively learning techniques for caring for, preventing diseases, and mixing feed for livestock, from one initial cow, the family now has four.
Mr. Lùng shared that in the past, his family's cattle farming suffered from frequent illnesses and deaths, so they didn't dare raise them on a large scale. Since receiving guidance from commune officials on building barns and caring for the cattle, his family feels much more at ease. At the end of 2024, his family sold one cow for 15 million VND to cover living expenses. They plan to expand the barn to raise more cattle in the near future.

Like Mr. Lùng, the family of Mr. Cử Mí Ly, in Sủng Phính B village, also received a breeding cow from the government. Mr. Ly expressed that having this breeding cow is like having an extra "fishing rod" to develop his family's economy . Family members divided the tasks among themselves, from building the barn to stockpiling feed, determined to take good care of the herd to quickly increase the size of the herd and create a sustainable source of capital to escape poverty.
According to Mr. Vang Mi Sinh, Head of Sung Phinh B village: "During the period 2023-2025, the village received support in the form of 50 breeding cows for 50 households. With the opportunity to develop production, the people have actively cared for the cows to encourage rapid reproduction and generate additional income."
Transforming production mindset
According to a report by the People's Committee of Thang Mo commune, from the more than 10 billion VND of capital from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction (2022-2025), the commune has implemented 18 livestock projects, supporting 476 poor and near-poor households.
To date, starting from the initial breeding herd, the villagers have successfully raised and multiplied the herd to over 700 calves. Of these, households have proactively sold more than 250 beef cattle to the market, earning over 3.7 billion VND. This income has helped many families accumulate capital for further livestock farming.

Mr. Giang Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thang Mo commune, affirmed: The greatest benefit from livelihood models is not just increased livestock numbers or income, but the transformation in people's awareness. Instead of waiting and relying on one-sided support policies from the State, the ethnic minorities here have proactively strived to improve themselves.
With preferential loans from the Social Policy Bank and initial support in the form of breeding stock, many households have boldly contributed additional capital and independently researched techniques to invest in raising black pigs, mountain goats, and cattle to diversify their income sources. This represents a fundamental shift from passive to proactive, from fragmented production to a more calculated economic mindset.
In the coming period, the commune government will continue to coordinate with specialized agencies to promote the participation of local people in the sustainable production and consumption chain; strengthen the transfer and application of scientific and technological advancements into biosafety-compliant livestock farming processes. At the same time, the commune will flexibly integrate and effectively implement preferential credit policies, creating the most favorable conditions for people to access long-term loans to expand the scale and improve the quality of local agricultural products.
With support from national target programs and the proactive efforts of the people, livelihood models in Thang Mo commune are gradually proving effective. These models not only contribute to poverty reduction but also create a foundation for people to develop sustainable economies and improve their living standards in their homeland.
