Don Duong commune is a major vegetable producing area in the country, with regular production on over 2,000 hectares of various vegetables and thousands of tons of produce supplied to the market. However, recently, the locality has faced heavy damage due to flooding, seriously affecting this key vegetable growing region.

Observations in the villages of the commune show that many farming households have proactively rebuilt their greenhouses and reinforced their glasshouses to resume production. Simultaneously, priority has been given to dredging and clearing the silted-up canals and internal field roads to ensure irrigation water and transportation for production. Many areas of green vegetables have been restored early and have now taken root and developed leaves, bringing hope for a new crop season in the flood-affected areas.

To restore production, the People's Committee of Don Duong commune has focused on guiding farmers to take advantage of favorable weather conditions to plant short-term vegetables for the Tet holiday, such as various types of cabbage, lettuce, scallions, and herbs. These crops have a short growing season, are easy to sell, and are suitable for cultivation conditions after floods, contributing to quickly generating income for the people.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Canh from Don Duong commune, these vegetables have a short growing season, allowing for quick harvests, making them suitable for the urgent need to restore production before Tet (Lunar New Year). Furthermore, the cultivation techniques are simple, with low risks, and are well-suited to the soil conditions after recent floods. Importantly, these vegetables have high demand and stable outlets during Tet, making it easy for farmers to sell their products. Thanks to low investment costs but quick economic returns, this group of short-term vegetables contributes to generating income and stabilizing the lives of people after natural disasters. “For mustard greens, the time from planting to harvesting is only about 20-30 days, and can even be harvested as early as 18-20 days for young greens. The plants grow quickly, are easy to care for, are not picky about soil, and are suitable for urgent cultivation conditions. Yields are stable, and demand is high, especially during Tet, so the market is favorable,” Mr. Canh said.

According to Mr. Tran Hung Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Don Duong commune, the immediate priority is to encourage residents to proactively rehabilitate the land affected by the recent floods and to determine suitable crops to prepare for the Lunar New Year. Mr. Dung stated: “The commune's specialized departments will assist residents in selecting crops, including short-term vegetables, to ensure timely planting. In the long term, the commune will continue to improve the land and develop a long-term plan, mobilizing other resources to restore Don Duong commune's vegetable growing area.”

In addition, for areas with minor damage, local authorities will urgently encourage people to apply recovery measures such as pruning trees, treating fungal diseases after waterlogging, and supplementing nutrients appropriately to help plants recover quickly. For areas where flowers were damaged, local authorities have advised farmers to adjust their care schedules, increase fertilization, and strictly manage pests and diseases to ensure the yield and quality of flowers for the Tet market.
