We were at the Provincial Ethnic Boarding High School in mid-May. Teachers and 12th-grade students were diligently and intensely preparing for the national high school graduation exam in the final stretch. La Thi Tam, a student in class 12A, said: Besides the three compulsory subjects – Mathematics, Literature, and English – she chose to take the Natural Sciences subject combination, hoping to apply to the Foreign Trade University. Through the mock exams organized by the school and the Department of Education and Training, she realized her English skills were weak and needed more practice.

Ms. Tran Xuan Mai, Deputy Principal of the Provincial Ethnic Boarding High School, said: In the 2017-2018 school year, the school has 171 12th-grade students who will be taking the national high school graduation exam. Along with the three compulsory subjects, 100 students chose to take the Social Sciences subject combination, and 71 students chose the Natural Sciences subject combination. This year, only 6 12th-grade students registered for the graduation exam, while 165 students registered for the university entrance exam. Therefore, the school is focusing on exam preparation for the students, aiming to raise the average score of the three university entrance exam subjects to 22 points (an increase of 0.5 points compared to the average score of the previous year). The school's solution is to assign experienced teachers to review the material with the students. Every week, the school rewards students to encourage them to study well for the exam. In addition, the school organizes the "Lighting Up Dreams" program, inviting successful students to speak and raising funds to support underprivileged students, empowering them to confidently and steadily overcome the upcoming exams.
At Lao Cai City High School No. 1, the exam preparation atmosphere is also in full swing. According to Ms. Pham Thi Tuyet Thanh, the school's Deputy Principal, this year the school has 338 12th-grade students, of whom 327 aspire to university, and 11 only want to take the high school graduation exam. Last year, the school's graduation rate reached 99.7%. To improve the quality of this year's national high school graduation exam, the school has innovated its guidance, incorporating students' graduation exam results into the year-end teacher evaluation; directing subject departments to learn from last year's exam, focusing more on subjects with low graduation rates compared to the school's requirements, such as Biology and Foreign Languages. Teachers are emphasizing students' self-study abilities in class, guiding them on self-study methods to improve their knowledge and skills.
High school in mountainous area focuses on preparing students for graduation exams.
Unlike high schools in the city, the majority of students in high schools in the mountainous districts and communes of the province are focused on taking the high school graduation exam. At Bac Ha District No. 1 High School, this year, out of 216 12th-grade students, 63% only registered to take the exam for the high school graduation exam. Mai Thuy Duong, a student in class 12A3, said: "My aspiration is to study tailoring or cooking after finishing 12th grade, so I only registered to take the exam for the high school graduation exam."
According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Toan, Principal of Bac Ha No. 1 High School: Based on the students' abilities, the school has implemented a system of appropriate exam preparation, focusing on simplifying the curriculum to suit students' capabilities. The school faces a challenge: currently, about 30 12th-grade students live off-campus in rented accommodations. Therefore, the school requires all 12th-grade students in the boarding program and those living off-campus to attend self-study sessions from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The school's labor union assigns teachers to assist groups of weaker students; the Youth Union regularly checks the boarding program's discipline and the students' academic performance in the rented accommodations to promptly correct any issues and remind students to dedicate more time to exam preparation.
Along with Bac Ha District No. 1 High School, other high schools in mountainous areas with many ethnic minority students also focus on exam preparation for students taking the high school graduation exam. The common solution of these schools is to separate students at risk of failing the graduation exam and provide them with appropriate preparation, helping them acquire basic knowledge and skills to answer the questions, avoiding failing grades, especially in Mathematics and English.
Mr. Nguyen The Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, stated that, in response to the innovative requirements of the 2018 National High School Graduation Examination, high school teachers and students must be flexible in teaching, learning, and exam preparation, effectively applying innovative ideas and best practices from subject departments and teachers; thoroughly classifying students according to their abilities and teaching at an appropriate level, increasing the workload in teaching and exam preparation for students with weak understanding, ensuring thorough understanding at each stage, and selecting experienced teachers to tutor weak students. To mobilize "collective intelligence," schools should regularly organize school-level thematic workshops and cluster-level workshops (by district and city) on teaching and exam preparation to exchange best practices and methods to improve the effectiveness of subject department management, teaching, testing, and evaluation, and to enhance the quality of student learning. At the same time, it creates opportunities for students to supplement any knowledge gaps and catch up on the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the requirements of the upcoming exam.
