On the morning of June 25 (local time), a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan , with the town of Hashikami in Aomori Prefecture recording tremors at level 6 on Japan's 7-level seismic intensity scale – a very rare level, according to the Japan Times.
A slight tremor was also felt in the capital city of Tokyo.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicenter was located off the coast of Iwate Prefecture at a depth of 50 km. Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture recorded a weak magnitude of 6, while several cities in Iwate Prefecture recorded a strong magnitude of 5.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, at a magnitude 6 earthquake, people can only crawl and cannot walk during an earthquake. Unsecured furniture will be knocked over.

The Tohoku Shinkansen high-speed train line has temporarily suspended operations.
The office of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has established a task force to respond to the earthquake.
Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister Takaichi said there was "no risk of a tsunami" and urged residents in the affected areas to "remain vigilant for the possibility of another earthquake of similar magnitude."
To date, there have been no reports of casualties and no abnormalities have been detected at nuclear power facilities in the region, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said at a press conference.
Fuji TV reported that some people may have been trapped in an elevator at Hachinohe after it stopped working due to the earthquake.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi instructed the Japan Self-Defense Forces to conduct aerial reconnaissance operations in areas affected by the earthquake.
Northern Japan has experienced a series of earthquakes in recent months.
In May, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, a weak 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale, struck the Tohoku region. Prior to that, in April, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake also hit the area, prompting authorities to issue a special alert, urging residents to be vigilant against the possibility of a stronger earthquake.
