Over two days (February 22-23), the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center of the Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) recorded seven earthquakes occurring in Mang Den and Mang But communes, Quang Ngai province.

Specifically, on February 22nd, three earthquakes occurred in Mang Den commune; on February 23rd, four earthquakes occurred in Mang But and Mang Den communes.

The earthquakes ranged in magnitude from 2.6 to 3.4 on the Richter scale, with focal depths of approximately 8.1 to 8.2 km. The strongest earthquake, measuring 3.4, occurred at 0:14 AM on February 23rd in Mang But commune. All earthquakes were classified as having a natural disaster risk level of 0.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center is continuing to monitor and update developments regarding the earthquakes.

Previously, on February 21st, six consecutive earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.6 to 4.0 on the Richter scale occurred in Mang But commune, Quang Ngai province.

The earthquakes in this area are classified by experts from the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center as induced earthquakes. Induced earthquakes occur cyclically, closely related to the water storage activities of reservoirs. There are periods of weak earthquake activity, and periods of intense earthquakes. It is predicted that earthquakes will continue in this area, but their magnitude is unlikely to exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale.

Since 2021, this area has recorded hundreds of earthquakes. Previously, the area belonged to Kon Plông district, Kon Tum province (now Quảng Ngãi province). The largest earthquake recorded was on July 28, 2024, with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale.

According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, since the beginning of the year, the whole country has recorded 24 earthquakes with a magnitude of M>= 2.5. In addition to the triggered earthquakes in Quang Ngai, some other provinces/cities in our country also experienced small earthquakes in Dien Bien, Lang Son, and Son La.
