Ms. Diem Kieu accompanied her child in reviewing history, preparing for the entrance exam to grade 10.

Ms. Diem Kieu from Thoi Lai district shared that her daughter aspires to attend a specialized high school. Ms. Kieu is concerned about the family's distance to the school, as her daughter would have to rent a room alone. She also worries that her daughter's academic abilities might be inferior to those of her peers in the city center, making it difficult for her to compete. However, seeing her daughter diligently follow her study schedule and demonstrate her love for history through self-study, research, and seeking guidance from teachers, she reconsidered. “Recently, after much effort, my daughter won third prize in the city-level history competition for gifted students. This is a great motivation for her to strive for success in the 10th grade entrance exam. My daughter said that the specialized school has dormitories; if she gets accepted, she will have a healthy and safe learning and living environment. Seeing her mature in her thinking, my whole family feels reassured, confident, and supportive of her,” Ms. Kieu said.

Mr. Thanh Hai from O Mon district recounted that three years ago, when his family was choosing a high school for his son, many conflicts arose. Mr. Hai said: “My son excelled in Math and Chemistry. From middle school, we enrolled him in exam preparation courses at a center. My wife and I planned for him to take the specialized Math or Chemistry entrance exam when he entered high school, as a foundation for him to pursue his dream of entering medical school. But after researching and comparing, he changed his mind and wanted to apply to a different school, catching my wife and me off guard. My wife was angry and pressured him to choose: either apply to the specialized school or drop out.” Mr. Hai had to persuade him, and he and his wife spent time listening to their son's thoughts and aspirations. His son confided that, after researching, he realized the school his parents were aiming for didn't suit his abilities or personality. The school he chose had strengths in Math and Chemistry, and a less stressful learning environment. After hearing his son's explanation, Mr. Hai and his wife gradually understood and accepted the situation. Currently, Mr. Hai's child's academic performance is very stable, maintaining the title of excellent student for three consecutive years. Mr. Hai's family is confident that in the upcoming exam, their child will be admitted to medical school as a dream.

In reality, many parents haven't given enough attention to and thoroughly analyzed how to choose a school that suits their family circumstances, conditions, and their child's academic abilities. Some are overly confident about their child's academic achievements; others always think their child isn't good enough or capable of getting into a prestigious school...

Ms. Hong Mai from Cai Rang district said: “My sister’s son has been good at English since he was little, winning high awards in district-level student competitions. Yet, when he took the entrance exam for 10th grade, choosing the English specialization, he failed with a very low score, shocking the whole family. Therefore, three years ago, when my daughter wanted to apply to a prestigious school, I firmly disagreed, even asserting that she would never pass. Despite my lack of support, my daughter persevered and achieved her goal. Looking back, I still feel a pang of regret.” According to Ms. Mai, her daughter wasn’t particularly strong in foreign languages back then. But after just three years of studying in a suitable environment, she has made a breakthrough and has now obtained the necessary foreign language certificates. Recently, her daughter won a scholarship and will be studying in Taiwan starting this August.

A few years ago, Ms. HK also "forced" her daughter to take the entrance exam for a prestigious school, even though her daughter didn't like it. After passing the exam and entering 10th grade, after only one semester, Ms. HK's daughter showed signs of "declining," falling behind her classmates. Her daughter confided that the learning environment was too stressful; despite trying, she found it difficult to adapt and was constantly exhausted. "Gradually, my daughter became withdrawn, quiet, and often locked herself in her room for hours. Seeing her like that, I knew I had made a mistake," Ms. HK shared. To salvage the situation, Ms. HK applied to transfer her daughter to another school. The new school had a more suitable learning environment, making her daughter happy and allowing her to integrate very quickly. Currently, Ms. HK's daughter has graduated from university and has successfully invested in and started a guesthouse business.

According to many parents who have gone through the journey of accompanying their children through high school and the crucial entrance exams, the important thing is to choose a school that suits their child's abilities and create enthusiasm for learning... so that studying and exams do not become a source of pressure for the child or the parents.
