A new direction

In early 2026, the Television Film Center - Vietnam Television (VFC) will launch a high-quality miniseries. This is a high-quality series, consisting of 16-20 episodes, with a focus on rarely explored or even never-before-seen themes and genres, unique characters, and an emphasis on enhancing the emotional experience for viewers.

Each film is a unique world , yet powerful enough to move and leave a lasting impression. The production teams boldly showcase innovative storytelling, build a system of characters with distinctive personalities, and focus on enhancing the emotional experience for viewers. This is a step towards meeting the increasingly diverse needs of the audience and expanding the creative potential of Vietnamese television dramas.

The three films chosen to kick off the quality miniseries series are "Countdown Clock" by director Bui Tien Huy, "The First Promise" by director Nguyen Duc Hieu, and "White Fire" by director Bui Quoc Viet.

While "Countdown Clock" features surreal elements with its journey to prolong the lives of loved ones, "The First Promise" offers viewers a realistic story of girls dreaming of becoming beauty queens through the journey of a young Tay ethnic girl striving to conquer the spotlight. Meanwhile, "White Fire" continues to explore the thrilling crime theme but delves deeper into the inner conflicts of the characters.

Sharing his thoughts on this new direction, director Bui Tien Huy said that participating in miniseries films brings him a lot of creative inspiration. With short durations and novel themes, he feels he has the opportunity to do what he wants. This also encourages young directors like him to experiment more to create more engaging works.

Not only the director, but many members of the "Countdown Clock" film crew also expressed their enthusiasm for this new genre, hoping to bring viewers an interesting, unique, and meticulously crafted film. Actress Hoang Ha, who plays Ha Chi in "Countdown Clock," excitedly shared: "This is the first time I've participated in a film with surreal elements, so I'm very curious. When I learned that miniseries are VFC's new direction, I immediately accepted the offer to work with the team to bring higher quality works to television viewers."

Creative Challenge

Alongside the opportunities, miniseries also present numerous challenges for filmmakers. With their short running time, telling a complete story, developing characters with sufficient depth, and maintaining audience engagement throughout the film is both a test of creativity and a constant push for filmmakers to reinvent themselves.

Director Nguyen Duc Hieu, director of the film "The First Promise," shared that the time limit became a pressure for him. He had to carefully plan every step, from how to tell the entire story in a short amount of time to how to make the film as polished as possible, as well as how to create a novel story for the audience.

Considered a "heartthrob" of the small screen, and having successfully embodied many different roles, actor Thanh Son, who plays Thanh in the series "Countdown Clock," also feels a little pressure with this new genre. Thanh Son shared that he was quite surprised when VFC decided to invest in miniseries with many novel themes. This is not only a challenge for him but also for the entire film crew. Although very excited about this role, he cannot avoid the pressure of the new experiences, especially as it is his first time participating in a film with surreal elements and working alongside a special "co-star," the dog Coddy. Actor Thanh Son hopes that the efforts of the entire film crew will bring viewers an engaging and emotionally rich work.

The emergence of miniseries demonstrates Vietnam's efforts to revitalize television, not only in content but also in its approach to audiences. As tastes continue to evolve, such experiments are expected to open up more options and motivate professionals to constantly innovate.

While it will take time to verify its long-term effectiveness, this move shows a positive sign: Vietnamese television dramas are proactively seeking new directions instead of repeating familiar formulas.
