Dong Thap accelerates emission reduction.

To achieve the goal of developing ecological and sustainable agriculture, Dong Thap province is focusing on implementing the "Emission Reduction Program for Crop Production in the period 2025 - 2035, with a vision to 2050" (hereinafter referred to as the Program). This is a necessary and inevitable direction in agricultural production today.

MANY ADVANTAGES

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the locality has many advantages for implementing the Project.

Farmers at Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative are focusing on producing low-emission rice to enhance the value of their agricultural products.

First and foremost, there is the large scale of production, with approximately 227,000 hectares of rice and over 134,900 hectares of fruit trees.

In addition, the irrigation system in the province is relatively complete and has initially developed some models of emission-reducing production.

In addition, the locality has a fairly developed system of agricultural cooperatives, which have experience in linking with businesses in production and consumption.

More importantly, the innovative mindset of farmers in Dong Thap , who are always ready to embrace sustainable production models…

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the locality has proactively prepared quite early for the implementation of the Project.

According to the plan, Dong Thap aims to have 100% of its rice cultivation area applying low-emission, sustainable farming practices by 2035; reducing greenhouse gas emissions in crop production by at least 20% compared to traditional farming methods.

The province also aims for at least 60% of its key fruit-growing areas to adopt low-emission farming practices, efficiently utilizing irrigation water, fertilizers, pesticides, and agricultural by-products; gradually expanding this to other crops suitable to the ecological conditions and market demands.

The locality will build and put into operation at least 10 pilot models of low-emission crop production with clear economic and environmental benefits, serving as a basis for evaluation, summarization, and replication.

Simultaneously, pilot at least 20 models capable of measuring, reporting, and evaluating emission reduction results; gradually approach the carbon credit development mechanism in the agricultural sector when conditions are met according to regulations.

The locality also aims for at least 70% of low-emission crop areas to be organized for production through cooperatives, partnerships, or business linkages, linked to traceability and stable consumption; the income of people participating in low-emission crop production to increase by at least 30% compared to traditional farming methods; and at least 80% of low-emission crop production areas to be managed and monitored using digital tools such as electronic logs, traceability, water management, fertilizer and pesticide management, and emission monitoring.

In addition, the province will build and develop a brand identity for key products manufactured using low-emission processes in Dong Thap province, linking them to domestic consumption and export…

A key foundation is the province's active participation in the Mekong Delta's 1 million-hectare high-quality, low-emission rice project; simultaneously, implementing the TRVC Project - Transforming rice production towards reduced emissions and increased value with the participation of businesses, cooperatives, and farmers.

Through practical implementation, many sustainable farming practices have been applied, such as: rational irrigation water management; reducing the amount of seeds sown; reducing chemical fertilizers and increasing the use of organic and biological fertilizers; and integrated pest management.

At the same time, the province is gradually changing the practice of not burning straw after harvest, moving towards using straw as a raw material for the circular economy.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Director of Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative (My Qui commune, Dong Thap province) said: "In previous years, farmers mainly produced on a small scale, with unstable output."

For over two years now, to enhance product value, the cooperative has been cultivating high-quality rice as part of the 1 million hectare rice project aimed at reducing emissions.

This model is very beneficial; in addition to receiving support with rice seeds and fertilizers, farmers also receive training on cultivation techniques to apply in the production process. Furthermore, the cooperative links with businesses, bringing products to supermarkets and for export, helping farmers feel secure in their production and increase their income…”.

Vinh Hien Co., Ltd. (Phu Thanh commune, Dong Thap province) is one of the businesses participating in the cooperative's program to produce high-quality rice with reduced emissions.

Mr. Huynh Van Danh, Director of Vinh Hien Co., Ltd., said that this year's winter-spring crop is the third time the company has partnered with My Thanh Bac Agricultural Service Cooperative (My Thanh commune, Dong Thap province) to produce low-emission rice on an area of 100 hectares.

This includes 50 hectares of Dai Thom 8 rice and 50 hectares of OM 18 rice. When produced according to the emission reduction process, the rice yields higher productivity than outside the model and reduces costs.

In particular, the company guarantees the purchase of all products from cooperative members at a price 200-300 VND/kg higher than the market price. In recent days, even though rice prices have fallen, the company continues to buy at the same price as in the initial period.

Not only in rice production, Dong Thap is also promoting fruit production towards reducing emissions, increasing the use of organic fertilizers and biological pesticides, managing nutrients and irrigation water rationally, and linking it with planting area codes and traceability for key products such as mangoes, durians, oranges, and tangerines.

SCALING UP EMISSION REDUCTION MODELS

According to Le Ha Luan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, in the coming direction, for rice cultivation, the province will continue to expand production according to sustainable farming practices within the framework of the Project on 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta region.

Vinh Hien Co., Ltd. is partnering with a cooperative to produce high-quality rice and reduce emissions during the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop season.

The focus is on implementing a comprehensive set of solutions such as: reducing the amount of seeds sown; managing irrigation water rationally; reducing chemical fertilizers and increasing the use of organic and biological fertilizers; and integrated pest management. At the same time, burning straw after harvest should be avoided, and models for collecting and processing straw should be developed to serve the circular economy.

The province is also strengthening linkages between businesses, cooperatives, and farmers to organize production along the value chain, improving the quality and value of rice.

For fruit trees, Dong Thap currently has about 134,900 hectares, with many key products such as: mangoes, durians, oranges, tangerines, longan…

Among them, Cao Lanh mangoes and durians from the Cai Lay - Cai Be region are high-value export products.

The province will focus on developing fruit farming models that reduce emissions; increasing the use of organic fertilizers and biological products; managing water and nutrients properly; and reducing emissions from fertilizers and pesticides.

At the same time, develop production areas linked to planting area codes, traceability, and export standards. This aims to gradually enhance the value and sustainability of the fruit industry.

Comrade Le Ha Luan added: "In its orientation, the province will determine that the implementation of the Project must be linked to the restructuring of the crop production sector towards ecological practices, reducing emissions and increasing the value of agricultural products."

Based on this, the province will gradually develop and replicate emission-reduction production models for each key crop. This will lead to the formation of farming processes suitable to the ecological conditions and characteristics of each crop sector.

Dong Thap will also promote the application of science and technology and digital transformation in production area management; and build a system for monitoring, measuring, and reporting emission reductions.

At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen training and capacity building for farmers and cooperatives to effectively implement sustainable production processes…”.
