The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), closed at 108.15 - up 0.14 points from the trading session on January 30, 2025.

The US dollar rose against several other currencies, including the yen and the euro, on Thursday as markets weighed the threat of new tariffs, slower-than-expected US economic growth, and the European Central Bank's interest rate cut.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States would impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, reiterating his warning to the two countries that are top trading partners of the United States.

Adam Button, a currency analyst at ForexLive in Toronto, said: "When Trump says something is about to happen, the market won't want to believe it or fully accept it until the orders are signed and the market is certainly caught by surprise."

Data from the Commerce Department on Thursday showed the U.S. economy grew 2.3% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, slightly lower than analysts' expectations, amid weak business spending. Inflation rose slightly, with the personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index increasing 2.5%.

The ECB cut borrowing costs by 25 basis points, as widely expected, and left open the possibility of further cuts as concerns about a sluggish economy outweigh worries about persistent inflation.

The US dollar strengthened significantly against the Canadian dollar following Trump's comments. The dollar rose 0.55% to 1.45 Canadian dollars per US dollar.

The US dollar weakened 0.54% to 154.36 against the Japanese yen. Against the Swiss franc, the USD rose 0.33% to 0.91. The euro reversed earlier gains and fell 0.24% to $1.0395.

The US dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, rose 0.2% to 108.12.

Button said: "We've seen a surge in the euro, but I was struck by comments from (ECB President Christine) Largarde when she made it clear that 'we haven't discussed whether it's time to stop cutting interest rates'."

On Wednesday, the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) kept its benchmark overnight interest rate unchanged at 4.25%-4.50%, while officials dismissed claims that inflation had "progressed" toward the Fed's 2% inflation target.

Conversely, other central banks, including Canada and Sweden, both cut interest rates by 0.25 percentage points. The Brazilian central bank raised interest rates by one percentage point to 13.25% overnight and is expected to raise them further.

Bank of Japan Vice Governor Ryozo Himino said on Thursday that the central bank will continue to raise interest rates if the economy and prices develop as the bank forecasts.

Button said: "Traders have somewhat forgotten about the Fed meeting, so they've bought at least another six weeks before a decision has to be made, or are looking toward April or May before we have our next in-person Fed meeting, in my view."

Bitcoin rose 1.32% to $105,138.31. Ethereum increased 3.23% to $3,241.76.
