According to the Daily Mail, Burslem was once a bustling, wealthy town and was the birthplace of Robbie Williams, star of the band Take That. (Photo source: DM) However, now, the town is nothing more than an abandoned place, with dilapidated buildings and a gloomy atmosphere.
In 2019, the town had the highest vacancy rate of any place in the UK. "Many buildings have deteriorated and closed. The bustling market has been gone for decades," said one resident. An old pub next to the post office is closed and abandoned with scaffolding above. “My husband and I had our wedding reception at the George Hotel. It’s a fantastic hotel – the perfect place in Burslem for a special occasion,” Terry said, pointing to the George Hotel, built in the 1920s and close to the town square. It is now used by asylum seekers and homeless people.
Marilyn Mountford, a resident of Queen Street, said the town had "fallen into decline". Burslem School of Art was built in the early 1900s. Many stores are now closed and locked. An abandoned building on Westport Road. An empty office building on Keates Street.
The apartments on the upper floors of this building are falling apart while the shops downstairs are all boarded up. Baines Store on Queen Street. A building with a "for rent" notice.
