In 2019, this town had the highest apartment vacancy rate of any place in England. "Many buildings have fallen into disrepair and closed down. The once bustling market disappeared decades ago," a resident said. An old pub next to the post office is closed and abandoned, with scaffolding above it. "My wife and I held our wedding reception at the George Hotel. It's a wonderful hotel – an ideal place in Burslem for special occasions," Terry said, gesturing toward the George Hotel, built in the 1920s and near the town square. It's known that the hotel is now used by refugees and homeless people.
Marilyn Mountford, a resident of Queen Street, said the town had "declined". The Burslem School of Art was built in the early 1900s. Many shops are now closed. An abandoned building on Wesport Road. An empty office building on Keates Street.
The apartments on the upper floors of this building are falling into disrepair, while the shops on the ground floor are all closed. Baines store on Queen Street. A building with a "for rent" sign.
