Waterway tourism in Hau Giang province

The People's Committee of Hau Giang province has just issued Plan No. 198 (KH198) on the development of waterway tourism to maximize potential and open up new opportunities for the "non-polluting industry" in this land with many rivers and canals.

Many items will be implemented.

The 198 Plan (KH198) has a total budget of over 58.5 billion VND from various sources and will invest in upgrading and constructing eco-tourism, agricultural tourism, and community tourism areas and sites; developing a fleet of boats and ships to ensure sufficient quantity and quality to meet the needs of visitors. KH198 calls for investment in many projects, including an elevated observation tower for 7 river branches, the restoration of the Nga Bay floating market, the construction of two additional wharves on the Xa No canal and along the Hau River, the formation of a fleet of boats to serve tourists, and the development of traditional music clubs for tourists to enjoy. KH198 will continue to preserve and promote historical and cultural relics in the province; conserve and develop traditional craft villages, including boat building, handicrafts, basket weaving, water hyacinth weaving, and mat weaving; and implement the display of OCOP products at wharves to serve tourists.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hau Giang province, Plan 198 will focus on exploiting the potential and strengths of waterway tourism, developing services, creating attractive tourism products to attract and meet the needs of domestic and international tourists visiting Hau Giang province; at the same time, building intra-provincial and inter-provincial tourism routes, investing in infrastructure, services, and destinations along inland waterway tourism routes, contributing to the preservation and promotion of cultural and historical values ​​to serve tourism development, create jobs, and increase income for local people.

Plan No. 198 stipulates that the development of waterway tourism must be in accordance with Decision No. 1829/QD-TTg dated October 31, 2021, of the Prime Minister on the planning of inland waterway infrastructure for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; the planning of Hau Giang province and the development of waterway tourism must be linked to environmental protection and sustainable development.

KH198 stated that in the initial phase, the tourism industry exploited the Xa No canal route in Vi Thanh City, with the waterway starting from the passenger terminal (in front of Bong Sen Hotel) passing through the special national historical site of Chuong Thien Victory, Xa No Bridge, Hau Giang Provincial Party Committee headquarters, 30/4 Bridge, Doan Ket Bridge, Vi Thanh Market, Muoi Thuoc Bridge, etc.

Joining this tour, visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the Vam Cai Sinh Victory Monument, the Cau Duc pineapple growing area, Be Hai strawberry garden, Ma Ba strawberry garden, Ngoc Dao goat milk farm, Muong Dinh homestay, and other attractive eco-tourism destinations and fruit orchards.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, Plan 198 also facilitates the effective exploitation of the Cai Con River tourist route (Chau Thanh District) connected with the very famous Nga Bay Floating Market (Nga Bay City). Participating in this route, domestic and international tourists have the opportunity to visit the Southern Joint Armistice Committee historical site, Thien An Strawberry Garden, Ut Ngan Strawberry Garden, Phuong Nghi Strawberry Garden, Chin Hung Fruit Garden, Bay Lieu Fruit Garden, Mien Vuon Homestay, Mua Xuan Eco-tourism Area, Nga Bay Song Garden Eco-tourism Area, traditional weaving and basketry crafts, etc. In addition, the route, connected with the riverine and orchard areas and preserving the characteristic riverine landscape along the Hau River, will also be an interesting highlight for tourists visiting Hau Giang.

KH198 will invest in and upgrade inland waterway terminals in Vi Thanh City, Nga Bay City, Chau Thanh A District, and Chau Thanh District; build waiting areas at the terminals, parking lots, restrooms, and waste disposal facilities; and arrange transportation to transfer tourists arriving by waterway.

"KH198 continues to beautify urban areas along canals and rivers; decorate and improve the landscape along both banks of the Xa No canal (the section passing through Vi Thanh City), the rivers in the section passing through Nga Bay City, and along the Hau River (Chau Thanh District); build a system of embankments on the sandbars in Nga Bay to serve the development of river tourism; upgrade pier and embankment structures; encourage garden tourism destinations to build suitable wharves and docks; develop road transport infrastructure connecting with wharves; and dredge some inland waterways managed by the province. KH198 also invests in many aspects of building new, attractive service products to serve tourists from near and far...", Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa informed.
