Cultural exchange and the film industry

For Mr. Marc E. Knapper, the US Ambassador to Vietnam, the film industry is an important topic because his hometown is Los Angeles – home to the powerful "film capital" of Hollywood. At the press conference for the "Vietnam Film Tourism Promotion Program – A New Destination for World Cinema," organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on September 16th in Hanoi, Mr. Marc E. Knapper said: “The US Embassy’s participation in promoting Vietnam’s film tourism is perfectly natural because fostering exchanges between the people of the two countries is one of the important elements, playing a key role in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. There is no better way than to promote cultural exchange through the film industry, so that we can tell the story of the Vietnamese people and the country of Vietnam to the world and to the United States.”

The Vietnam Tourism and Film Promotion Program in the US, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is scheduled to take place from September 23-25 in San Francisco and Los Angeles (California). The Ministry stated that the program is a major overseas promotion and advertising activity with the participation of many localities: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ninh Binh, and Quang Binh. Some participating KOLs include: H'Hen Niê, Miss Universe Vietnam 2017; Luong Thuy Linh, Miss World Vietnam 2019; actor and MC Quyen Linh; and actress Mai Thu Huyen…

One activity in the program is a space showcasing the country, people, and culture of Vietnam with approximately 100 representative, high-quality photographs. This can also be considered a solo exhibition by photographer Tran Tuan Viet, a photographer who has won numerous "Best Photo of the Day" awards on the National Geographic (Nat Geo) photo community. According to Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of the National Tourism Administration: "These photos don't focus on any particular locality, but rather encompass all the images that could make Vietnam the most beautiful film location."

Another important activity of the program is a seminar introducing the tourism and film potential of Vietnam, with an expected attendance of 400-500 delegates. Director Nguyen Trung Khanh said: “The main guests attending the seminar will be influential film producers and directors who will speak about Vietnam. Some expected guests include: Phillip Noyce, director of The Quiet American ; Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of Kong: Skull Island; Leann Emmert, Production Director of Kong: Skull Island; Lori Balton, Production Director of Shang Chi ; Justin Booth, Executive Producer of The Challenge ; Joel S. Rice, film producer; and Mai Suong, on-set production manager of The Challenge . In addition, we have also invited Oliver Stone, a renowned director.”

Businesses are the entities involved.

Mr. Ho An Phong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, shared that, in addition to inviting localities to participate in the activities, the Ministry is very interested in inviting filmmakers, actors, and those who have contributed to Vietnamese cinema. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has extended invitations "without limit," followed by a selection process.

“The term ‘screening’ here doesn’t mean discrimination; it means suitability. Ms. Mai Thu Huyen is one of the famous actresses of her time, and she is currently making films. In particular, she will soon be promoting several films and signing agreements with filmmakers in the United States,” Deputy Minister Phong said.

The promotional program also provides an opportunity for localities to showcase their own policies. Director Nguyen Trung Khanh revealed that each province and city will have its own policies to support film crews from Hollywood and around the world when they visit their locality.

Deputy Minister Ho An Phong also stated: “This is the first time the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has organized for Vietnamese tourism businesses and filmmakers to officially connect with Hollywood. This time, businesses will be the main actors, and they will have their own ways of contributing.”
