Bringing heritage to the digital space.

VHO - In the context of the strong spread of digital transformation across many fields, bringing cultural heritage into the digital space is not only an inevitable trend but also opens up opportunities for museums to get closer to the public. At Lam Dong Provincial Museum, the journey of digitizing heritage is being gradually implemented, with the expectation of creating a new look for the preservation and promotion of local cultural values.

Many positive results

For a long time, museums have been seen as repositories of memory, where artifacts "tell stories" in a rather traditional way. However, in the digital age, the experiential needs of the public, especially young people, have changed significantly. Visitors no longer want to simply view exhibits; they desire to interact, explore , and experience things in a more authentic and accessible way.

Recognizing this trend, the Lam Dong Provincial Museum has gradually implemented digital solutions such as building a database of artifacts, digitizing images and documents, and applying technology in exhibitions. Several representative collections have been digitized, making storage more systematic and facilitating easier public access through online platforms.

Approximately 6,000 artifacts have been entered into the museum's digitization system.

According to Mr. Phan Nhan, Deputy Director of the Lam Dong Provincial Museum, in order to implement the directives of the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in the general policy on digital transformation of the Central Government, the issue of digitizing artifacts has been implemented synchronously by the Lam Dong Provincial Museum since 2020 and has achieved many positive results.

Specifically, the Museum has successfully implemented a project applying Industry 4.0 technology in the management, preservation, and promotion of cultural values with three key objectives: developing software for managing artifacts; building a virtual museum in cyberspace; and showcasing 3D artifacts and representative artifacts on the virtual museum.

To date, approximately 6,000 artifacts have been entered into the system; the application of QR codes in displaying information about exhibited artifacts has been implemented with over 500 codes already in use. Simultaneously, an automated audio guide system in both Vietnamese and English has been implemented and is operational at the Da Lat Children's Prison National Monument.

QR codes were implemented to help the public easily access information about the artifacts.

“By 2025, the project was completed and received high praise from the unit. It can be said that this is the province's first project on the application of Industry 4.0 technology,” Mr. Nhan shared.

It is known that in the near future, the project "Digitization of Artifacts and Documents of Lam Dong Provincial Museum" (2026-2028) with a total investment of 50 billion VND will be implemented, focusing on digitizing all artifacts managed by the museum, while also building a 3D tour system and a modern projection room...

Opening doors to tourists.

The Lam Dong Provincial Museum's adoption of models that transform traditional exhibition spaces into integrated digital environments not only helps "extend the lifespan" of artifacts but also expands accessibility, bringing heritage beyond the museum's walls.

One of the clear benefits of digitalization is its unlimited accessibility in terms of space and time. Through digital platforms, people and tourists, no matter where they are, can learn about the history and culture of their local area.

Currently, the exhibition space at the central museum in Da Lat features approximately 400 representative artifacts that have been digitized and presented using QR codes to help the public easily access information through smart devices such as phones and tablets. With just one scan of the code, all the information and images of the artifact will appear in a complete and authentic manner.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, a tourist present at the museum, said: “When I came to Da Lat, I chose to visit the Lam Dong Museum with the aim of both sightseeing and learning, supplementing some knowledge for my work. I was quite impressed with the way they presented information about the artifacts using QR codes. This made it easy for me to find, collect, and store information about the artifacts that I needed.”

In addition, the virtual museum system on the website allows the public to take a 3D tour of both the interior exhibition spaces and the exterior landscape of the physical museum. This system provides visitors with an experience similar to the real thing, anytime, anywhere via the internet.

To enhance interaction with the exhibits, the Provincial Museum has selected and digitized approximately 200 representative artifacts in 3D, integrating them into a virtual exhibition space. The technique used is optical 3D scanning with a digital camera, allowing visitors to easily move, adjust viewing angles, zoom in and out, and access detailed information about the artifacts.

Nguyen Gia Huy, a student at Da Lat University, shared: "Before now, I..." I used to think museums were rather boring places, but after visiting and experiencing the digital spaces here firsthand, I've completely changed my previous perception."

Digital transformation has helped bring visitors closer to museums.

In the context of a recovering and increasingly competitive tourism industry, developing digital experiential products is seen as a "lever" to enhance destination attractiveness. When tourists can preview attractions through online versions, they will have more motivation to experience them in person at the museum.

According to statistics, the Lam Dong Provincial Museum welcomes a considerable number of visitors annually. In the first three months of 2026 alone, it received approximately 30,000 visitors. It is also one of the local museums that sells the most entrance tickets.

It can be affirmed that promoting the digitization of artifacts and applying digital technology to management and conservation work has contributed significantly to attracting visitors to the Lam Dong Provincial Museum.
