This year marks the fourth year that Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day has been held. Previously, in 2014, the Government decided to designate April 21st as Vietnam Book Day with the aim of encouraging and developing the reading movement in the community, raising public awareness of the meaning and importance of reading for enhancing knowledge, skills, developing thinking, education , and character building, honoring the value of books and those who create them, spreading and promoting books, and simultaneously increasing the responsibility of all levels, sectors, and social organizations towards building and developing Vietnam's reading culture. Later, to further spread and popularize reading culture, in 2021, Vietnam Book Day was elevated by the Government to become Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day.
Over the past three years, during each "festival" of books and reading culture, numerous activities have been organized nationwide with the participation of many publishing houses, partner organizations, libraries, creative spaces for books, and schools.
This year, at the National Library of Vietnam, Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day was held on Saturday, April 19th. With the theme "Every Page - A Source of Pride," and in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and the reunification of the country, the staff of the National Library of Vietnam hoped that each page opened would be a journey for readers to discover the traditional values and glorious achievements that have shaped Vietnamese identity.
Books serve as a bridge between a glorious past and a bright present, inspiring every Vietnamese citizen to cherish and appreciate the achievements of previous generations and to continuously cultivate knowledge to build an increasingly prosperous and developed country.
The National Library of Vietnam was one of the pioneering institutions in organizing book reading festivals after Vietnam officially joined the Berne Convention on Copyright Protection. Since then, this activity has been maintained annually.
This year, the book festival activities at the National Library of Vietnam are very diverse, including an exhibition of books on the Great Victory of Spring 1975; a panel discussion introducing the works "Red Rain" by writer Chu Lai and "In the Whirlwind" by writer Khuất Quang Thụy; a drawing competition based on books with the theme "The Country Full of Joy"; a storytelling competition based on books "Vietnam in My Eyes"; and a thematic book reading "Stories of Heroes"...
The Hanoi Library also organized book exhibitions and displays; book exchanges and introductions; and launched the Hanoi City Reading Culture Ambassador Contest 2025. Meanwhile, at Hanoi Book Street, book fairs, painting competitions, and events celebrating Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day were organized with the theme "Books Expand the World of Thought," conveying the message that "each page of a book becomes a gateway to the world, allowing each reader to find themselves in the words."
In response to Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day, publishing houses such as the Women's Publishing House, the Youth Publishing House, and the Kim Dong Publishing House... not only participated in book fairs in many provinces and cities nationwide, including Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Ninh, and Dak Lak... but also organized numerous book-related events to reach out to readers.
For example, Kim Dong Publishing House organized a series of book exchange and introduction activities with various themes such as the Weekend Reading Corner "Put Down Your Phone!" with author Bui Phuong Tam; an exchange with author Truong Anh Tu in the program "Open the Book - Touch the Rhyme", and with author Bui Tieu Quyen with the work "The Gray Tiger and the Amazing Adventures"...
Kim Dong Publishing House also collaborates with several schools to organize explorations of traditional Vietnamese craft villages with the book series "Famous Ancient Crafts," and with financial expert Tran Cong Danh sharing "Secrets to Personal Financial Management for Young People" through books on personal finance...
April, the month of books, is also an opportunity for publishing houses to showcase their own book fairs. For Nha Nam, as is customary every year, this is the time to organize the "Summer Book Fair." 2025 marks the first time the Nha Nam Summer Book Fair will be held in all three regions of Vietnam: Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, with many special offers.
Meanwhile, Dinh Ti Books and Thai Ha Books have teamed up to co-organize a special book fair at the Hanoi Children's Palace – the "Connecting Book Fair" – from April 17th to 20th. The fair targets young readers with many attractive programs such as "Every Visit Gets a Gift," "Free Workshop with Your Child," attractive discounts on quality books, a speed Lego building competition, and exciting prizes.
Especially during the weekend, there will be activities teaching children how to recognize and handle dangers at home such as poisoning, fire, burglary, and pet attacks... guided by hero Pham Quoc Viet - Team Leader of the FAS Angel First Aid Rescue Team, who saved 12 lives from the "sea of flames" in the mini-apartment fire on Khuong Ha Street (Thanh Xuan District); and activities guiding children on how to brainstorm, coordinate colors, and draw pictures on the theme "I Love Vietnam" shared by artists from Dinh Ti Books.
