Visiting Chi Tien in early August, when the summer rains have just ended and the midland weather begins to cool, the vast tea hills appear lush green, stretching like a soft silk carpet covering the gentle slopes. In the early morning mist still clinging to the tea buds, the fragrant aroma of young tea leaves wafts on the early morning breeze, signaling the start of a new harvest. This is also the golden time for tea growers of Hoai Trung Tea Co., Ltd. to harvest tea for the production of premium Dinh tea – the flagship product that builds the brand of clean Phu Tho tea, contributing to establishing a new position for agricultural products from the ancestral land.

The secret to creating the flavor.

On nearly 20 hectares of tea plantations, Hoai Trung Company mainly cultivates famous tea varieties such as small-leafed midland tea, purple bud tea, LD1, LD2, VN15, etc. Among them, Dinh tea – made from the youngest tea buds – is the flagship product, requiring meticulous care from planting and cultivation to harvesting. Ms. Bui Thi Mao – Director of Hoai Trung Tea Company Limited – said: "Dinh tea is very 'fussy'. It can only be harvested manually, the best time being from 5:30 to 8:00 AM, when the buds have just opened, still covered in dew, at which time it retains its refreshing taste, sweet aftertaste, and delicate natural aroma." After harvesting, the young buds must not be left in the open environment for more than 2 hours but must be immediately processed in a hygienic factory where the company has proactively designed a modern, closed-loop process, from wilting, enzyme inactivation, tea rolling, drying, flavoring, to sorting and packaging.

A unique feature of the process is the tea wilting trough made of stainless steel mesh combined with a 500m³/hour air circulation system, ensuring the tea buds reach the standard wilting level of 60-65%, reducing the pungent smell and preserving the delicate flavor. Next, an automatic enzyme-deactivating roasting machine adjusts the temperature electrically instead of using charcoal as in the old method, ensuring not only workplace safety but also helping the tea retain its bright green color and characteristic sweet aftertaste. The tea rolling process has also been improved with a wooden rolling plate instead of metal, allowing for flexible adjustment of pressure and tilt, reducing tea dust by up to 95%, maximizing the percentage of whole tea leaves, and resulting in a uniformly curled product with a fragrant aroma when brewed. Finally, the tea is lightly roasted to develop a rice-grain aroma, then sorted by hand and packaged right at the factory.

"We don't use artificial flavorings. The refreshing aroma and golden-green color in a cup of tea come directly from the young tea buds, harvested at the right time and processed using the right techniques. That's the essence of Hoai Trung tea," Ms. Mao affirmed. Not only does the modern production process ensure flavor, but it also increases yield. From every 120 tons of fresh tea leaves, the company produces approximately 13-15 tons of high-quality dried Dinh tea, which sells for three times the price of traditional tea, reaching 600,000 VND/kg.

Hoai Trung Tea Co., Ltd. has invested in a modern production line for processing bud tea products to enhance and preserve the delicious flavor and quality of its products.

Elevating the status of Vietnamese agricultural products.

Beyond economic benefits, Hoai Trung Tea Company Limited focuses on developing safe, traceable, and environmentally sustainable agriculture. Microbial and organic fertilizers completely replace chemical fertilizers; workers are thoroughly trained in technical processes, from tea plant care to machinery operation and product preservation.

The company's strategy is also closely linked to the community: all 29 permanent workers at the factory are local residents, earning a stable income of 8-9 million VND per month. In addition, the company actively supports local people in planting satellite tea plantations using clean varieties and organic farming techniques, and commits to purchasing all the harvested products.

In May 2023, Dinh Hoai Trung tea products were evaluated and recognized by the Central Council as achieving the OCOP 5-star title – a testament to the product's quality and strategic importance. Not stopping there, also in 2023, the solution "Improving methods for growing and processing high-quality green tea," recognized as OCOP 5-star by Ms. Bui Thi Mao – Director of Hoai Trung Co., Ltd., successfully reached the final round of the Vietnam Talent Award; the Chairman of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Learning awarded her the "Promoting Learning - Self-Learning, Achieving Success" award.

From the fragrant tea served on the tea table to the lush green hillsides in August, Hoai Trung tea embodies knowledge, perseverance, and the aspiration to bring Vietnamese agricultural products to the world.
