Yong Wu Road in Jiangxi Province is dubbed "the most beautiful road in China" thanks to the spectacular sight of Poyang Lake's rising water level causing the road to be completely submerged.
Yong Wu Road is part of the X219 route, connecting the ancient town of Wuzhen with neighboring towns in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. The more than 5-kilometer-long road passes through Poyang Lake – China's largest freshwater lake. When the lake's water level rises to approximately 18.6 meters, the road is submerged, creating a unique spectacle and earning it the title of the most beautiful underwater road.
When the lake's water level exceeds 19 meters, local authorities will halt traffic on the road to ensure safety. Therefore, visitors are only allowed to admire this scenery at the beginning of the rainy season. During other seasons, the water level remains below flood warning levels, making traffic safe. Last August, when the road reopened to traffic, over 8,000 vehicles caused congestion.
Since the railway officially opened in 2013, no serious accidents have occurred, thanks to the safety barriers on both sides and drivers adhering to the maximum permitted speed.

Besides Yong Wu Road, the Shiziguan wooden bridge – a structure floating on the Qingjiang River in Hubei Province – is equally famous. However, the route was temporarily closed to traffic after an accident in 2023 when a vehicle crashed through the railing and plunged into the water. The section of road across the wooden bridge has since been reopened and has speed and weight limits for vehicles.
