Erik ten Hag is back. |
Accordingly, the 55-year-old strategist has been appointed as the technical director of FC Twente, with a contract extending until mid-2028.
Ten Hag has been unemployed since September last year, after being sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just three games in charge. He was appointed by Leverkusen in May to succeed Xabi Alonso, who left the club to manage Real Madrid .
However, a poor start in the Bundesliga, earning only one point after the first two rounds, led to Ten Hag losing his job after just the third match.
Following a difficult period in Germany , and the pressures and controversies surrounding his tenure at Manchester United, Ten Hag's future was once in doubt. His reputation had significantly declined compared to his peak, when he led Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
However, Ten Hag chose a new path by returning to FC Twente, where he began and ended his playing career.
According to an announcement from the Dutch club, Ten Hag will officially join FC Twente's football management team from February 1st. From the 2026/27 season, he will succeed current technical director Jan Streuer, who is expected to retire after this season. Ten Hag has already begun participating in the planning for the new season.
Speaking at his unveiling, Ten Hag stated his desire to contribute his experience in youth training, team building, and high-level sportsmanship to strengthen FC Twente's technical foundation. The club's management highly valued Ten Hag's professional profile and considered this an important step in their strategy to professionalize the football system.
Ten Hag's decision comes as Manchester United have just parted ways with Ruben Amorim, his successor at Old Trafford, indicating that the post-Ten Hag period for the English club continues to be turbulent.
