The European Commission (EC) has just announced plans to allow travelers to and from the European Union's (EU) Schengen area to store their travel information digitally.
According to Euronews, the EC said that data currently stored on the chips of passports or identity cards can be transferred to smartphones to enable faster border crossings, paving the way for a more seamless and secure travel experience.
The EC believes that submitting travel plans and documents to authorities in advance by phone will shorten time at border crossings, allowing for quick, accurate verification and easier detection of suspects, especially those suspected of human trafficking.
This immigration system is expected to begin trial operation as early as November.
