EU rolls out mobile passport

The European Commission (EC) has just planned to allow travelers to and from the European Union (EU) Schengen area to store travel information in digital form.

Data currently stored on the chip of a passport or identity card could be transferred to smartphones to allow faster border crossings, paving the way for a more seamless and secure travel experience, the EC said, according to Euronews.

The EC believes that submitting travel plans and documents to the authorities by phone in advance will shorten the time at border crossings, allow for quick and accurate verification and easier detection of suspects, especially those suspected of human trafficking.

This immigration system is expected to begin trial operation as early as November.
