In a newly released report, the FAO stated that without effective interventions, the amount of antibiotics used in livestock farming worldwide could increase by approximately 30% by 2040. The organization emphasized that the inappropriate use of antibiotics is accelerating antibiotic resistance, affecting the health of both animals and humans.
The FAO believes that the cost of responding to future antibiotic resistance will far exceed the cost of investing in preventative solutions now. The report also predicts that the Asia-Pacific region will account for the majority of global antibiotic use in livestock farming. However, improving productivity, animal health care systems, and effective farm management can significantly reduce the need for antibiotics while still ensuring food security.
