FIFA launches Peace Prize

The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced on November 5 that it would establish the FIFA Peace Prize, which is expected to be awarded for the first time during the 2026 World Cup Finals draw in Washington, USA, on December 5.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the award was to honour individuals who have made a significant contribution to bringing people together and giving hope to future generations. "Football stands for peace and on behalf of the entire global football community, the FIFA Peace Prize - Football Unites the World will recognise these great efforts," he stressed.

The announcement came just before Infantino attended the Americas Business Forum in Miami, where US President Donald Trump and soccer star Lionel Messi were also present as speakers. The identity of the first recipient of the award has not been revealed, but international media speculated that Mr. Trump could be a strong candidate.

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
