Is there anything unusual about Fort Worth?

Having just landed at Dallas Fort Worth airport after a flight of more than half a day from San Jose, Trung Nghia – a journalist and photographer who has covered World Cups for over 20 years, from Japan and South Korea in 2002 to the present – looked at me, smiled, and immediately asked a very concise question: “You only have half a day in Fort Worth, is there anything unusual here?”

Experience the World Cup fever at Texas Live! – a food and entertainment complex in Fort Worth.

In the Dallas Fort Worth area of Texas, it would be hard to believe that nothing unusual exists, because even the ordinary things here are often exaggerated in the spirit of "Everything is bigger in Texas." Wide highways, pickup trucks with giant wheels, XXL soda cups, vast parking lots, and even the fervent World Cup enthusiasm from fans all over the world are no exception to this "size."

And so began our half-day city tour to be ready for the opening of Dallas Stadium. There was no elaborate itinerary, no professional tour guide, just two journalists who loved to wander, take photos, and find glimpses of life behind the scenes of the biggest sporting event on the planet.

Dallas Stadium in Arlington, the venue for the match between Argentina and Jordan.

A destination for half the world's fans.

I often joke that half the world's fans will go to Texas and the other half will go to… America. Because if a neutral fan goes to Texas to watch the World Cup, especially to Dallas Stadium in Arlington, chances are they'll want to see Argentina play, want to see Messi in person, and with all his… beard, having already been told by their mentors: "If you're in Texas, remember to visit Buc-ee's at least once!"

Calling Buc-ee's a rest stop is accurate, but not entirely accurate. For many Texans, it's more of a "cultural landmark" on the highway, as people in this vast state are less accustomed to using public transportation and primarily rely on cars or private racing vehicles. For international tourists during the World Cup, Buc-ee's becomes a kind of museum of American life, where one can gain some understanding of Texas not only through its large cities and modern stadiums, but also through its enormous gas stations along the highway with their endless rows of food stalls and a smiling beaver mascot on every shirt, cup, or souvenir bag.

The bus carrying Dutch fans stopped outside Buc-ee’s.

I took Trung Nghia to Buc-ee's in Fort Worth like taking a friend visiting America for the first time to another "stadium," where the game doesn't take place on a grass field but amidst the distinctive aroma of BBQ grilled meats, Texas-style hamburgers, dozens of types of Texas beef jerky, oversized sodas, and an abundance of souvenirs that would make anyone who loves taking pictures constantly raise their camera.

Here, the excitement for the World Cup is not as boisterous as in a stadium, but it is clearly visible in the eyes of those wearing their national team jerseys, in the voices speaking many different languages, and in the eagerness of tourists discovering for the first time that a giant gas station in Texas can also become a meeting point for travelers from all over the world.

I've seen on TV football fans stopping at hotels, airports, stadiums, and fan parades. But the World Cup in Fort Worth showed that a fan's journey can expand so much further. They don't just go to watch football. They visit Buc-ee's to eat barbecue, buy cowboy hats, take photos with cool, unique motorcycles, and take home stories that are sometimes even more memorable than the match score.

Enjoy the World Cup in an art museum.

What's interesting about the 2026 World Cup in the Dallas Fort Worth area is that soccer isn't just confined to the stadium. At the Arlington Museum of Art, the "More than a match" exhibition has transformed the beautiful game into a cultural and artistic experience.

The title "More Than Just a Football Match" speaks volumes about the exhibition's spirit. Football is more than just 90 minutes on the pitch. It's history, memories, team colors, migrations, fan communities, cultural symbols, and the personal stories each person carries with them into the stands.

Pele and Johan Cruyff's jerseys are on display at the "More than a match" exhibition.

The exhibition doesn't overwhelm viewers with cheers, but rather draws them away from the noise of the crowd to reflect on football as a phenomenon of history and culture. Even though it's just jerseys, I feel the presence of football legends like Pele, Maradona, Messi, Beckham, and Johan Cruyff right now.

The exhibition space helps viewers understand that behind every match at this world football festival lies a world of multifaceted information and burning passion. Some come to the stadium to cheer on their home team. Some come because of their idols. Some come because they want to experience, once in a lifetime, being surrounded by a sea of people singing the same national anthem. And there are also those, like us, who come to record glimpses of the match in words and photographs.

A corner of the National Medal of Honor Museum of the United States.

We took the opportunity to visit the museum right next to the National Medal of Honor Museum in the early afternoon, just a few hours before the match between Argentina and Jordan. Although not part of the FIFA World Cup series of events, the museum still had a festive atmosphere due to its location in Arlington's entertainment district, next to the stadium, attracting many fans who came to visit while waiting for it to open. Fans in the blue and white jerseys of Argentina or the red and white jerseys of Jordan had extra time to reflect on history and the soldiers honored by the United States.

Texas Live! is where the World Cup is felt through sound, big screens, the smell of barbecue, and jerseys.

Texas Live! – where even meals are filled with cheers.

Leaving the museum, we visited Texas Live!, a food and entertainment complex located near Arlington's football and rugby stadiums. If the museum is where the World Cup is told through images and memories, then Texas Live! is where the World Cup is felt through sound, big screens, the smell of barbecue, and jerseys "crowded" between tables.

Here, you don't need a ticket to feel like you're in the World Cup. Just stepping into the vast space with its giant screens, bars, restaurants, and the blaring sports commentary from all directions, visitors can understand why Americans are so good at turning a game into a consumer, entertainment, and community festival.

Texas Live is a favorite destination for fans before games.

For Vietnamese visitors, Texas Live! might be a rather unusual experience. It's unlike watching soccer back home, where people sit close together over iced coffee in the early morning, discussing every play, or enjoying a beer on the sidewalk in the afternoon. Here, everything is bigger, brighter, noisier, and more distinctly American. People watch soccer while eating burgers, pizza, tacos, and barbecues, taking photos, meeting new friends, and sometimes simply standing in the crowd to feel like they belong in a global festival.

I watched Trung Nghia constantly raising his camera and suddenly thought, perhaps for those in the photography profession, America during the World Cup is not just about players and the pitch. It also includes the breaks between matches, unfamiliar faces, brightly lit restaurants, fans wandering into souvenir shops, and even locals curiously watching the international fans of all skin colors transforming their familiar city into a multilingual sporting arena.

The girls in the cheerleading team welcome visitors to Texas Live!

Our half-day city tour ended perfectly when we managed to take a group photo in front of Dallas Stadium, just before Messi and his teammates played their final group stage match. Trung Nghia went into the stadium to cover the event, while I returned to my daily routine, watching the game on TV like everyone else. That moment reminded me that sometimes a short trip can hold so many stories. From Buc-ee's to the art museum, from Texas Live! to Dallas Stadium, from a simple question, "Is there anything unusual about Fort Worth?" to a half-day of driving and walking in the Texas summer sun, it all came together to form a small slice of the World Cup season in the distant United States…
