Eintracht Frankfurt have approached Xabi Alonso. |
After parting ways with Dino Toppmöller, Frankfurt quickly began the search for a new coach, and the name attracting the most attention was Xabi Alonso. According to German media, particularly Bild, the Bundesliga club considered the former Real Madrid coach a "top-class" option, capable of creating a significant impact both professionally and in terms of image.
Sporting Director Markus Krösche is said to have proactively contacted Alonso to explore the possibility of a collaboration. This move comes just days after the Spanish coach left Real Madrid, fueling speculation about his future in Germany.
Frankfurt's decision to sack Toppmöller stemmed from disappointing form. The 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen was the final straw, given that the team had conceded 39 goals in 18 rounds.
With one of the worst defensive records in the Bundesliga, Frankfurt currently sits seventh and faces the risk of falling behind in the race for a Champions League spot.
Besides Xabi Alonso, the management of the Hessen state team also considered other options such as Edin Terzic, Marco Rose, or Roger Schmidt. However, at Deutsche Bank Park, Alonso was still considered the most ambitious target, a choice that could elevate the sporting project if successful.
However, the chances of this deal reaching completion are considered very low. After a successful spell with Leverkusen, Alonso was targeted by Bayern Munich and Liverpool before joining Real Madrid. Compared to those potential destinations, Frankfurt is seen as a step backward in terms of prestige and would require a large financial investment beyond the club's usual capabilities.
In this context, many sources suggest that Xabi Alonso will not rush into accepting the offer. His priority is to wait for a larger, more stable, and ambitious long-term project in Europe. Nevertheless, Frankfurt will still try their luck, because in the world of football, seemingly "impossible" moves are sometimes played to the very end.
