Prices are rising due to global supply shortages and concerns about drought affecting coffee production in major producing countries like Vietnam and Brazil. The unprecedented price increases are benefiting growers.
Speaking to reporters, several coffee purchasing agents in the Central Highlands said that despite high coffee prices, purchasing remains difficult, and many farmers are continuing to wait for prices to rise.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, a farmer in Kon Tum province, said that since this morning she has received many phone calls from dealers asking to buy her produce now that prices have risen, but she has no intention of selling yet.
"About a month ago, my family sold 6 tons of coffee at 133,000 VND/kg, so we don't need the money yet. We still have about 8 tons of coffee left, waiting to see what the price is before deciding what to do next," said Mrs. Hien.
According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, if the upward price trend continues, coffee prices could reach 140,000 to 150,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , coffee exports in the first quarter of this year reached over 2.8 billion USD, nearly 1.5 times higher than the same period last year.
However, according to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, La Nina is predicted to replace El Nino in 2025, posing a risk of frost and seriously affecting coffee production in Vietnam and Brazil. In early January, frost in Son La dried up large areas of coffee plantations in Chieng Co, Chieng Den, and Hua La.
Businesses recommend that farmers closely monitor weather conditions and prepare irrigation plans to minimize risks during prolonged dry seasons.
Businesses believe that Vietnam's coffee exports could reach over $6 billion, and even $7 billion by 2025 if an effective response strategy is implemented.

Although the volume decreased by 28.4% compared to the same period last year, the value increased by 26.2% thanks to higher export prices.
