Speaking to El Confidencial , Mestre stated that Messi's departure from Camp Nou due to financial difficulties was one of the biggest mistakes in the club's history. He emphasized Messi's immense influence, not only on the pitch but also economically .
"Whatever we do for Messi is never enough. What he brings is extraordinary, not only sportingly but also financially. Tours with Messi and tours without Messi are two completely different stories. He earns a high salary, yes, but it's deserved because he helps the club earn so much money," Mestre shared.
Mr. Mestre also revealed that Messi and his family were "very angry" with Laporta for the way the club handled the incident that year. "I know from people close to them that they were very angry. What Laporta said about the barbecue to reconcile with the Messi family was not true," he added.
The former vice-president of Barca suggested that the club should take a symbolic action to honor Messi, such as naming a stand after M10. However, to date, the Catalan club has not taken any concrete steps.
