* According to BloombergPork is losing traction in many parts of the world, but the trend is especially pronounced in Europe. European Union (EU) pork consumption is expected to fall to its lowest level in more than two decades this year, and within the next two years, pork production in the region will fall by about a tenth.
Meanwhile, pork producers in the US are also grappling with falling profits and demand, rising costs and more regulatory requirements.
Even in China, which accounts for more than half of the world's pork consumption, the meat is no longer favored by the middle class as they view beef as a healthier option, according to research by management consulting firm McKinsey.
However, the situation in Germany remains more dire than most. Pork producers here face a range of challenges from slowing economic growth, changing eating cultures and broader demographics, as well as a decline in production as a result of public health crises.
Germans are choosing to eat less meat. The number of people in this country who identify as vegetarian has increased since 2020.
According to the 2022 nutrition report from the German federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, 44% of those surveyed said they follow a "flexible" diet that limits meat consumption.
