As observed on the morning of December 23rd, many farmers in the eastern communes of the province were beginning their vegetable harvest. Some households, having finished harvesting, were focusing on plowing the land to sow again.
When we arrived, Mr. Le Minh Canh's family (Phu Trung hamlet, Long Binh commune) was harvesting water spinach to sell to traders. According to Mr. Canh, the prices of all kinds of vegetables have been continuously falling in recent days. Currently, traders are buying water spinach at 2,000 VND/kg. With 4 acres of water spinach, his family harvests an average of half a ton each day to supply to traders.
Mr. Le Minh Canh added: "When vegetable prices were high, my family didn't harvest much. With the current price of water spinach, my family is losing money on electricity and labor costs."
Not far away, Mr. Tran Ngoc Thom's family also just finished harvesting 5 white radishes. The radishes were bought by traders at a price of 2,500 VND/kg. Currently, his family is focusing on cleaning and plowing the land to plant a new crop of radishes.
“The current price of radishes is between 2,000 and 3,000 VND/kg. At this price, farmers are not making a profit and are losing money. Before, radishes were expensive but farmers here didn't have enough to sell, now the price is too low,” Mr. Thom lamented.

In Phu Thanh commune, the price of vegetables is currently very low. Mr. Le Van Viet's family (Binh Tay hamlet) grows more than 1 hectare of amaranth. The vegetables are currently being harvested and sold at 2,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Viet shared: "For about half a month now, vegetable prices have started to drop. Currently, the prices of all kinds of leafy vegetables have fallen sharply. Malabar spinach, amaranth, water spinach, and other types of cabbage are priced at 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg; cucumbers are 3,000 VND/kg... At these prices, farmers are not making a profit."
According to Mr. Huynh Van Luong, Director of Binh Nhi Rural Agricultural Service Cooperative (Dong Son commune), more than a month ago, vegetable prices in the area peaked, but are now too low, especially over the past week. Specifically, gourds and pumpkins are currently priced at 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg. Particularly, the price of various types of cabbage has almost hit rock bottom, at 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Luong, besides rice, the cooperative members also have a large area dedicated to growing vegetables. At these prices, farmers are facing many difficulties.
