Pork prices continue to rise. |
According to the General Statistics Office, the food price index increased by 0.41% in February due to increased consumer demand during the early year holidays following the Lunar New Year.
Most notably, the pork price index increased by 1.74% compared to the previous month due to the impact of disease outbreaks, the aftermath of Typhoon No. 3 in 2024, the inability of many farms to restock, and farmers concentrating on selling off their pigs en masse right before the Lunar New Year, leading to a shortage of pork supply.
As of February 28, 2025, the price of live pigs nationwide fluctuated between 72,000 and 80,000 VND/kg. And by March 7th, the price of live pigs in the Northern region continued to increase in most provinces and cities. Currently, traders in the North are purchasing live pigs at prices ranging from 75,000 to 77,000 VND/kg.
In the Central and Central Highlands regions, the highest price for live pigs reached 82,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, in the Southern region, the highest price for live pigs reached 83,000 VND/kg. Live pig prices are not expected to decrease in the short term.
Along with the increase in pork prices, animal fat prices increased by 1.2%; animal offal prices increased by 0.86%; roasted meat and sausage prices increased by 0.83%; and canned meat prices increased by 0.79%.
In February, along with a sharp increase in pork prices, rising prices for eating out, rental housing, and transportation services driven by consumer demand were the main reasons for the 0.34% increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in February 2025 compared to the previous month; a 1.32% increase compared to December 2024; and a 2.91% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
On average, in the first two months of 2025, the CPI increased by 3.27% compared to the same period last year; core inflation increased by 2.97%.
