According to shrimp farmers, shrimp prices are expected to continue rising in the near future due to scarce supply and high market demand during the year-end period.
Mr. Ngo Minh Tuan, from Tan Phu Dong commune, Dong Thap province, owner of a 40-hectare farm with 100 high-tech shrimp ponds, said that currently, the price of whiteleg shrimp raised using high technology is 250,000 - 260,000 VND/kg for the 20-25 shrimp/kg size; over 200,000 VND/kg for the 30 shrimp/kg size; and over 100,000 VND/kg for the 100 shrimp/kg size. These are record prices in recent years. With an average production cost of 90,000 VND/kg, farmers can earn a profit of 80,000 - 90,000 VND/kg for larger shrimp.
Mr. Ngo Minh Tuan stated that the increase in shrimp prices is due to the fact that it is the end of the season, resulting in a scarcity of supply, while the market demands a large supply at the end of the year. In addition, due to storms and floods in the Central region, aquaculture farms have suffered damage, leading to insufficient shrimp supply for the market. Furthermore, fewer households are able to raise shrimp at the end of the season, and those who do will not have a harvest until closer to the Lunar New Year.
According to seafood processing businesses, the increase in shrimp prices at the end of the season is mainly due to reduced supply. At this time, many households have finished harvesting their ponds, leaving little shrimp on the market, while domestic and export demand remains stable. On the other hand, purchasing businesses are proactively raising prices to accumulate stock, preparing for end-of-year orders.
Dong Thap is considered a locality with great potential in developing freshwater and brackish water aquaculture. The sharp increase in shrimp prices at the end of the season is an incentive for farmers to invest further in expanding production. Thanks to the application of high-tech, multi-stage shrimp farming models, many households have achieved large yields of uniform shrimp that sell at good prices. However, for the shrimp industry to develop sustainably, close coordination between the government, businesses, and farmers is necessary.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the provincial agricultural sector aims to encourage high-tech, environmentally friendly shrimp farming models; apply disease monitoring and early warning systems; and build a supply chain from production to consumption to reduce the risk of "bumper harvest, low prices".
Provincial authorities also advise farmers to diversify their aquatic species, combining shrimp farming with fish farming or other rotational farming models to reduce environmental pressure and stabilize income. According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, the total area for coastal aquaculture in 2025 will reach 21,690 hectares, achieving 104.9% of the plan; the production of farmed and harvested seafood will reach over 1 million tons, an increase of 3.8% compared to the same period.
According to the People's Committee of Dong Thap province, in the coming time, the locality will invest in developing industrial and high-tech aquaculture areas for large-scale commercial aquaculture production. In addition, the province will accelerate the application of scientific and technological advancements, widely implement biosafety and disease control practices, issue aquaculture area codes, and link these to traceability, food safety conditions, and Good Aquaculture Practices (GAP).
In recent years, the province's aquaculture sector has continued to focus on key species such as pangasius, shrimp, tilapia, and mollusks. By 2026, Dong Thap province aims to achieve an aquaculture area of 22,790 hectares, with a total production of over 1 million tons from farming and fishing. To date, the province has 80 seafood processing plants for export with a capacity of nearly 1 million tons per year.
Notably, Dong Thap province is undergoing a strong restructuring of its agriculture sector, aiming for green and sustainable growth, focusing on developing the agricultural economy, applying science and technology, and linking to markets, thereby enhancing product value and improving people's lives.
