Airfare prices are "cooling down".

The further in advance of the departure date, the lower the price.

According to a survey by the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority on airfares (excluding taxes and fees) in basic economy class on high-traffic domestic routes (such as Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi – Da Nang, Hanoi – Cam Ranh/Nha Trang, and Hanoi – Phu Quoc) in the first half of August 2024, the average fares offered by Vietnamese airlines ranged from 35-65% of the maximum regulated price.

During daytime hours, the average ticket prices announced by airlines will be higher than during other times such as early morning or late evening (Illustrative image).

Specifically, on the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City route, the highest ticket price offered by Vietnam Airlines was approximately 2.2 million VND/one-way, equivalent to 65% of the maximum price of 3.4 million VND (for flights after 5 PM on Friday, August 2nd - right before the weekend).

On other days and departure times, ticket prices are significantly lower. The lowest price is offered by Vietravel Airlines, with tickets priced at nearly 750,000 VND/one-way, equivalent to 26% of the maximum price (for days from August 5th to August 15th, for departures before 9 AM and after 5 PM).

Also on the North-South main route, and with many domestic airlines operating at a high frequency, is the Hanoi-Da Nang route. The highest prices were seen in the days leading up to the survey (August 1st and 2nd) for Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air, at approximately 1.6 million VND/one-way, or about 56% of the maximum price of 2.89 million VND (between 9 am and 5 pm).

For longer departure dates, airfares from airlines have decreased significantly. On many days, prices are around 25% of the maximum fare. For example, Vietravel Airline has a series of fares starting from just under 300,000 VND/one-way, which is 12% of the maximum fare (for departures after 5 PM on days from August 5-13).

It can be seen that airlines are still offering tickets at relatively low prices compared to the maximum price allowed by regulations.

How can I buy cheap tickets?

Another domestic route that attracts significant interest every summer is the Hanoi – Cam Ranh (Nha Trang) route, with the highest fare on the weekend of August 3rd reaching nearly 2.5 million VND/one-way (72% of the maximum price of 3.4 million VND), offered by Vietnam Airlines at 9:00 AM.

5 PM. With this route, Vietjet Air is offering the lowest average ticket price on many flight days during the survey period, at only 25% of the maximum price.

The Hanoi – Da Lat route showed stable fares throughout the survey period. For the immediately preceding departure date (August 2nd), Vietnam Airlines offered fares around 2.9 million VND for daytime flights, equivalent to 80% of the maximum fare of 3.4 million VND. For other days throughout the period, fares fluctuated between 30-40% of the maximum fare.

Vietjet Air's prices throughout the survey period were significantly lower than the maximum price, ranging from only 800,000 to 1,100,000 VND, or 24-30%. Bamboo Airways, also operating this route, had prices throughout the period fluctuating around 25-50% of the maximum price.

With the Hanoi – Phu Quoc domestic flight route currently operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air, the maximum regulated price for transportation services is 4 million VND. According to a survey, the highest price charged by Vietnam Airlines is 3.05 million VND, equivalent to 76% of the maximum (for flights departing on the morning of August 8th). On other flight dates during this period, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet are offering tickets at 30-50% of the maximum price.

Specifically, for early or late departure times on later dates, Vietnam Airlines offers fares starting from only 27% of the maximum fare (August 13-14). Vietjet Air offers fares starting from only 20% of the maximum fare (August 6-15).

Overall, ticket prices are correlated with the time of day the flight departs. During daytime hours, especially from 9 AM to 12 PM, the average ticket prices announced by airlines will be higher compared to other times (early morning or late evening).

This is considered understandable and aligns with the priorities and needs of passengers who choose daytime flights, especially tourists, for convenience in booking accommodations and planning their travel itineraries.

However, some localities (such as Ho Chi Minh City) and travel companies now have programs to support accommodation for passengers who choose to fly during nighttime hours.

According to the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, this not only gives passengers more choices and helps reduce travel costs, but also contributes to reducing transportation pressure for airlines during daytime hours.

The fact that ticket prices fluctuate, with higher prices when booked closer to departure dates and lower prices further away, is an inevitable trend that can occur at any time of year.

Therefore, the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority advises passengers to plan their travel and book tickets early through official sales channels when choosing air transportation services, in order to select the most suitable ticket prices.

Currently, passengers can also consider arranging their plans, time, and personal circumstances to choose to travel during early morning or late/night hours. This will provide them with a better flight experience with domestic airlines.
