Tyson Fury also had to lose weight.

The Keto (Ketogenic) diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, and moderate-protein diet designed to put the body into ketosis—a state where it burns fat for energy instead of using sugar from carbohydrates.

In the Keto diet, fat accounts for 70-75% of daily nutrient intake, protein for 20-25%, and carbohydrates for a maximum of 10%.

It may sound counterintuitive, but the keto diet is a method chosen by many top athletes when they want to lose weight. The most famous example is heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury.

After reaching the peak of his career in 2015, Tyson Fury went through a difficult period with depression, alcoholism, and a reckless lifestyle. As a result, he gained weight, reaching 180kg.

About two years later, Fury decided to lose weight and chose the Keto method. Specifically, Fury opted for "dirty Keto," a variation of this method.

According to "dirty Keto," Tyson Fury ate a lot of fried red meat, sausages, bacon, eggs, cheese, mayonnaise, butter, and rye bread.

"Initially, like everyone else, I didn't think this was a diet. But the truth is, I lost all my excess weight," Fury said. After exactly 12 months, Fury had lost 65kg, weighing in at 115kg.

Why is the Keto diet effective?

It sounds truly paradoxical—eating only fatty foods and still losing weight. But this method has been scientifically proven. Specifically, according to Dr. Eric Westman, Head of Clinical Nutrition (Duke University, USA):

1. When there is a lack of carbohydrates, the body is forced to burn fat (ketosis).

Explanation: A normal body uses glucose (from carbohydrates) as energy. When carbohydrates are strictly restricted (<50g/day), the liver will convert fat into ketones to provide energy – this is the state of ketosis.

Result: Accumulated fat (including belly fat and visceral fat) will be continuously burned to maintain energy.

2. Saturated fats – help control hunger.

Feeling full for longer, fats and proteins are digested more slowly than carbohydrates, helping to reduce hunger and minimize snacking.

3. Stabilize insulin – the hormone that stores fat.

Insulin helps move sugar from the blood into cells, but high insulin levels (when eating a lot of carbohydrates) also promote fat storage. The keto diet significantly reduces insulin levels, leading to decreased fat storage and increased fat breakdown.

4. Reduce initial body water weight.

Starch retains water; each gram of glycogen (from starch) holds 3–4 grams of water. When starch intake is cut, the body loses water quickly, leading to significant weight loss in the first 1–2 weeks.

But this is only temporary; in the long run, you still need to burn fat for sustainable weight loss.

Athletes like Tyson Fury choose the Keto diet (or variations of it such as "Dirty Keto") because of its benefits, which are particularly well-suited to rapid weight loss and muscle maintenance, especially when they need to lose fat quickly while retaining strength.

Keto also helps reduce blood sugar fluctuations, lessen mood swings caused by sugar, and provides stable energy thanks to ketones – a good fuel for the brain. Many studies have also shown that the Keto diet can improve mood and cognitive function.
