CNN quoted the contents of Gabbard's letter to US President Donald Trump: "Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026. My husband, Abraham, was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. He will face significant challenges in the coming weeks and months. I must temporarily suspend my duties to be by his side in this fight."
According to The Guardian, Gabbard had a tumultuous term, in which she was largely sidelined as US President Trump launched attacks on Venezuela and Iran.
Two sources within the U.S. administration revealed last month that Trump had asked cabinet members whether he should replace Gabbard.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on May 22, Trump wrote: "Having completed her excellent work, Tulsi Gabbard will leave the administration on June 30. We will miss her." The US leader added that Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas will serve as Acting Director of the agency.
This latest development marks Gabbard as the fourth official to leave President Trump's cabinet in just over two months. Previously, Kristi Noem resigned as Secretary of Homeland Security in March, Attorney General Pam Bondi was fired in April, and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned in April following a series of allegations of misconduct.
