As the weather turns colder, officials and staff of the Tram Tau Commune Agricultural Service and Support Station are implementing various methods to disseminate winter crop production techniques to farmers in the area. Closely monitoring forecasts of unusual weather patterns, the station has advised farmers to take advantage of favorable weather to harvest rice, clear stubble, prepare the land, and create raised beds early for planting winter crops. The station has recommended suitable crop varieties and planting and care techniques, encouraging farmers to actively follow these guidelines.
The recent success of the oyster mushroom cultivation model implemented by the Si Ma Cai Regional Agricultural Service Center has opened up a new farming direction for many local farmers. With 1,000 mushroom bags, requiring minimal investment and cultivation area, after deducting expenses, it can generate an income of 15-20 million VND per month. If its potential is properly exploited, this could become a source of additional income for households.
Building on the success of the model, the Si Ma Cai Regional Agricultural Service Center has widely disseminated oyster mushroom cultivation techniques through hands-on training and dissemination via local information channels, attracting the attention of many farmers in the area.
After learning about oyster mushroom cultivation techniques, Ms. Giang Thi Co, from Si Ma Cai village, Si Ma Cai commune, decided to invest in about 500 bags of mushrooms for cultivation. According to Ms. Giang Thi Co, thanks to the hands-on guidance, she has confidently mastered mushroom cultivation techniques that were previously very unfamiliar to local farmers.
For example, the smart rice farming model that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, implemented by the Lao Cai Provincial Agricultural Extension and Services Center in collaboration with several other units, is being piloted in the spring of 2025 in three communes: Khanh Yen, Duong Quy, and Bao Ha, covering an area of 199 hectares and attracting 549 participating households. This farming model can reduce production costs by 2-2.5 million VND per hectare, achieve a rice yield of 8 quintals/hectare, and after receiving international certification, profits can increase by 8-10 million VND/hectare. The model also contributes to changing the mindset and production practices of farmers. The smart rice farming techniques are guided by the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Services Center to each participating farmer.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha, Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Services Center, the Center will continue to open training courses and build pilot models to enable local people to participate. The goal is to improve the effectiveness of applying scientific and technological advancements, encourage people to mechanize and apply high technology, introduce new high-yield and high-quality crop and livestock varieties into production, and attract businesses to participate in production linkages and product distribution.
Through training activities and the dissemination of farming techniques, the agricultural sector affirms its commitment and efforts to local farmers, helping to gradually change farming perceptions and build effective production models, aiming to develop agriculture in a safe, green, sustainable direction that adapts to climate change.
