Thien Tan: Preserving the cultural beauty of the Cao Lan ethnic group.

The Cao Lan people of Thien Tan commune, Huu Lung district, performed at the opening ceremony of the practical training class, showcasing their traditional folk singing.

The San Chay ethnic group (comprising two branches, Cao Lan and San Chi) mainly lives in several communes of Loc Binh and Huu Lung districts. The largest concentration of Cao Lan people is in Thien Tan commune, Huu Lung district, with 363 households and over 1,600 people. Currently, the Cao Lan people there still preserve many unique traditional cultural features such as: folk songs, call-and-response singing, traditional costumes... Especially their language and writing system (Han Nom script)...

In recent years, it's not uncommon to see women, including schoolgirls, dressed in traditional Cao Lan costumes performing at commemorative events and festivals organized by various organizations in Thien Tan commune.

Ms. Nong Thi Loan, Head of Minh Tien village, Thien Tan commune, said: The village currently has over 300 inhabitants, of which 12% are Cao Lan people. Every year, the villagers are regularly encouraged to wear traditional ethnic costumes, especially during events such as weddings, engagements, and festivals... Notably, the village currently has artisans who still preserve the spoken language, written script, and traditional customs of "Sending the land" (an important funeral ritual) unique to the Cao Lan people, contributing significantly to the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage in the area.

To achieve these results, for many years, the Party committee and the local government have made efforts to implement various solutions in preserving and promoting the cultural values of the Cao Lan ethnic group.

Mr. Nguyen Van Loi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thien Tan commune, said: "In recent years, the commune's Party committee and government have intensified the dissemination of Party directives and resolutions, and State policies and laws on preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of ethnic groups; and promoted the role of influential people in disseminating information on preserving ethnic cultural identity. Through concrete actions, the commune's Party committee, government, and mass organizations have propagated and mobilized the people to preserve and promote cultural values such as the spoken language, written script, ethnic costumes, and good, civilized customs, which are traditional beauties... In addition, the People's Committee of the commune has proactively proposed to the District People's Committee and relevant agencies to collect the spoken language, written script, and folk songs of the Cao Lan people to serve traditional education in the future..."

Accordingly, in August 2021, the People's Committee of Huu Lung district issued a decision to establish the Cao Lan folk singing club in Thien Tan commune. Meritorious Artisan Ninh Xuan Nhat, who teaches and manages the club, shared: "The club currently has nearly 20 members. To ensure the club's effective operation, we regularly contact artisans inside and outside the province to collect materials and restore traditional folk melodies. Club members regularly practice and exchange experiences in performing folk songs. At the same time, members actively teach the language and traditional songs to their children and grandchildren."

Building on previous achievements, on July 5, 2024, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province, in coordination with the People's Committee of Huu Lung district and the People's Committee of Thien Tan commune, inaugurated a training course on practicing and performing Sinh Ca singing. The course had 33 participants, mainly students from the commune. The trainees were taught and guided on basic techniques regarding the meaning, process, and methods of practicing and performing Sinh Ca singing in particular, and the folk dances and music of the Cao Lan people in general.

Through various methods of preserving traditional culture, the Cao Lan people in Thien Tan have contributed to improving the spiritual life and effectively implementing the "All people unite to build a cultured life" movement at the grassroots level. In the last three years, all 13 villages in the commune have met cultural standards; in 2023, 88.8% of households (1,290/1,453) in the commune met cultural standards, an increase of 1% compared to 2022...

Mr. Khong Hong Minh, Head of the Culture and Information Department of Huu Lung District, said: “Thien Tan is a commune with a large concentration of Cao Lan people. It is also one of the exemplary communes in the district in the work of preserving and promoting ethnic cultural identity. In order to promote the traditional cultural values of the Cao Lan ethnic group, in the coming time, the department will continue to advise the District People's Committee to strengthen guidance on propaganda, raise awareness among people about the importance of preserving traditional cultural values, especially researching and establishing more clubs for preserving and promoting ethnic identity in the commune.”
