Preserving the culture from the traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) setting.

Việt NamViệt Nam09/01/2025

Recreating the atmosphere of Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) in the past at museums, schools, restaurants, hotels, cafes, and public places has become commonplace in recent years, but the joy and excitement of welcoming the traditional Tet holiday remain the same every year. Whether it's simply checking in to capture moments of reunion with family and friends before the Lunar New Year, experiencing making banh chung (traditional rice cakes), visiting a rural market, or simply wanting to return to and immerse oneself in the atmosphere of Tet of the past… all are ways young people express their love, respect, and appreciation for the beautiful customs and traditions that bear the strong imprint of national culture every time Tet comes around.

The atmosphere at Cafe Bot (Ha Long City) is imbued with the spirit of traditional Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) with vibrant red colors.

Tet Nguyen Dan, the Lunar New Year, is the biggest and oldest traditional festival, deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture. The arrival of Tet marks the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one, filled with hopes and aspirations for good fortune, peace, happiness, luck, and success. In particular, with the desire to preserve and help young people better understand the valuable traditions of their ancestors and cherish national cultural values, activities recreating the atmosphere of Tet in the past are carried out in many diverse forms.

In Ha Long City, as the peaceful and warm Christmas season passes, many cafes quickly "dress up" with designs and decorations that evoke the atmosphere of the traditional Lunar New Year to welcome customers. Although each cafe has its own unique style, most of the displays reflect the traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) atmosphere, evoking nostalgia for old houses with antique objects, red couplets, apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, chrysanthemums, banh chung (traditional rice cake), watermelons, firecrackers, and red envelopes...

Ms. Tran Viet Phuong, owner of Opal rooftop coffee and tea shop (Ha Long City), shared: "Understanding the current trends of young people, according to each holiday season, we proactively design the space, decorate, and arrange accessories to create suitable check-in corners to attract customers. Especially during the long Lunar New Year holiday, along with decorating the shop with the characteristic red color of Tet, we also offer a service of renting traditional ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) and taking photos for customers. As a young person who loves traditional culture, I hope that creating a traditional Tet atmosphere in a modern coffee shop space is also a way to help the older generation reminisce about their childhood memories, while the younger generation will further appreciate and preserve the simple beauty of the old Vietnamese Tet and capture memorable moments of celebrating Tet with family and friends."

The Tet-themed atmosphere at Opal rooftop coffee and tea shop (Ha Long City) attracts many young people to check in.

These days, at the Provincial Youth Cultural Center, a joyful and bustling atmosphere is buzzing with preparations for the Tet experience program "Youth with the Spring Street Corner," which is being quickly finalized to welcome young people to come and have fun. Through activities such as making banh chung (traditional rice cakes), folk games, calligraphy, traditional market food , Tet decoration workshops, and a check-in corner, a simple and cheerful Tet atmosphere of the past will be recreated, providing a place for young people to not only visit and experience the culture but also learn many useful skills.

According to Bui Thi Van Anh, Director of the Provincial Youth Cultural Center: "In today's busy and hectic modern life, many families don't have time to experience Tet (Lunar New Year) culture with their children, such as cooking feasts, making banh chung (traditional rice cakes), and going to the Tet market... Therefore, through the Tet experience program 'Youth with the Spring Street Corner,' which has been organized for many years, we hope to help young people learn about Tet in a concrete, vivid way and directly participate in Tet activities, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of celebrating Tet early through meaningful experiential activities instead of just reading information and knowledge in books, newspapers, or watching television. From this, we create an environment for educating children about traditional culture and history in a close, practical, and effective way."

In addition, many large hotels such as Muong Thanh, Novotel, Citadines... have arranged warm and cozy traditional Tet spaces with many unique Vietnamese Tet experiences for foreign tourists. Tourists are taught how to make traditional cakes and jams; guided on how to play folk games; and learn about Vietnamese Tet culture… It is expected that from January 22nd to February 2nd, 2025, at the Flagpole Square, Planning, Fair and Exhibition Center of Quang Ninh province, the festival of Tet cultural space of ethnic groups in Quang Ninh province will take place, showcasing unique customs and meaningful traditions, aiming to introduce   To the people and tourists, this is a colorful picture of the Tet holiday, showcasing the diverse cultural aspects of Quang Ninh.

In countless different ways, recreating the atmosphere of traditional Vietnamese Tet not only affirms that despite the ups and downs of time, the customs of celebrating Tet will still be preserved and practiced by the people, but also expresses love for the homeland, respect, and pride in the age-old national culture of each individual.
