"Ms. Ba Thi and the Rice Grain" is a book recording the memoirs of Ms. Ba Thi, from the period after the complete liberation of the country in 1975. She was a mother and a woman who made many contributions to the cause before and after the liberation of the Vietnamese nation. She was a former member of the National Assembly's Economic , Planning and Budget Committee, former Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Food Trading Company, a member of the 8th National Assembly, and the first person to participate in abolishing the rice subsidy system and successfully implementing the first single-price rice sale in Vietnam. She played a decisive role in ensuring sufficient rice for nearly 4 million people in Ho Chi Minh City in the early days of peace after 1975. She was one of the first women to be awarded the title of Hero of Labor 10 years after the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country towards socialism.
In addition to the title of Hero of Labor awarded in 1985, during her life and revolutionary career, Ms. Nguyen Thi Rao was awarded by the Party and the State:
+ First-class Independence Order,
+ First-class Resistance Medal,
+ First-class Victory Medal,
+ First Class Resistance Medal for the War against the US,
+ First-class Liberation Medal,
+ 40-year and 50-year Party membership badges and many other prestigious titles.
This book chronicles her life and career of over 10 years of dedication to the country and its people. Specifically, it details each stage of her activities, including organizing rice procurement, contributing to stabilizing market prices through various methods supported by the public, and assisting the government in market management, etc. She was once dubbed the "Market Disruptor," and was recognized and awarded the title of Hero of Labor on October 3, 1985.
The book includes 5 sections.
Section 1: From an unnamed purchasing organization
Regarding its beginnings, the rice procurement committee was established in mid-1978, but in reality, it didn't have an official name in writing and existed until mid-1980. It revolved around four characters: Ngoc Dung, Man, Ut Hien, and Tam Cuong – the driver and regional commander – along with Mrs. Ba Thi, who faced many hardships, strived creatively, and showed great energy in their assigned procurement work to conquer the market.
Section 2: Leading to the establishment of specialized companies
Following the procurement process, the next task was transporting the purchased rice to the city, delivering it to consumers. Each stage, each position, each step affirmed the heavy role and responsibility of the procurement committee, creating initial trust and experience in socialist business methods, connecting close relationships and building confidence with the food industry in the provinces.
Section 3: Establishing a New Order in the City's Food Market
The formation of a widespread network of rice retailers throughout wards and communes, the renovation of markets, and the establishment of food stalls in markets have strongly impacted the market, narrowing the scope of operations and profoundly affecting rice traders. Innovations have been made to improve rice quality and equip businesses with equipment for cleaning substandard rice. Steps have been taken to improve and enhance operational efficiency year after year, with steadily increasing sales.
Section 4: Staff and Store Manager Team
The staff was comprised of retired veterans, invited by Mrs. Ba Thi to work with the company. These comrades had experience in district-level Party work, holding positions from Party Committee member to Secretary, making it a highly effective staff. Through weekly meetings and briefings within the company's Reform Committee, they not only reformed the work but also grasped and resolved real-world situations, connecting various networks and creating a particularly strong and stable structure.
Section 5: Who is Sister Ba Thi?
This book introduces the revolutionary activities before 1975 through the stories told by Sisters Suong, Thao, and Hien about Sister Ba Thi.
This is a work by author Hoai Bac from 1985, republished by Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House. The book introduces the formation and effective operation of the company and the people associated with it from the beginning, most notably Mrs. Ba Thi, helping readers gain a more comprehensive view of the country's situation during the years of reform.
