Having developed over more than two centuries, the art of Southern Vietnamese folk music (Don Ca Tai Tu) still retains its value, becoming a distinctive feature deeply ingrained in the cultural life of the people. During holidays, festivals, and traditional cultural events, Don Ca Tai Tu performances and exchanges are regularly held to serve the people. The lyrics and melodies convey the simple life of the people, reflect the changes in the locality, and praise love for the homeland and country. Mr. Nguyen Nho, Chairman of the Don Ca Tai Tu Club of Vinh Thong Ward, said: “The club has nearly 20 members and has been active for the past two years. Almost every evening, the club organizes activities, creating opportunities for members and lovers of Don Ca Tai Tu art to exchange experiences and contribute to preserving the traditional art of the Southern region.”
According to Nguyen Van Mao, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports , the province has consistently focused on preserving and promoting the art of Southern Vietnamese folk music (Don Ca Tai Tu). Most localities in the province have active and effective Don Ca Tai Tu clubs and groups; many generations within families have followed this profession.
Recently, the Department of Culture and Sports, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Environment, organized the provincial traditional folk music competition, themed "Cultural Activities Week - Building New Rural Areas in 2025," aiming to honor and promote the essence and value of the intangible cultural heritage of Southern Vietnamese traditional folk music, recognized by UNESCO. The competition brought together over 200 performers and artists from 24 units in the province, presenting nearly 90 performances. The content praised the glorious Communist Party of Vietnam , President Ho Chi Minh, and President Ton Duc Thang; honored the history, revolutionary traditions, and national cultural identity; the formation and development of the province; and celebrated the spirit of creative labor and contributions to building new rural areas, as well as outstanding socio-economic achievements. Simultaneously, it aimed to disseminate and educate about the meaning and importance of building new rural areas according to the guidelines, policies, and strategies of the Party and the State. Encouraging and promoting new creative works that focus on the theme of building new rural areas…
Ms. Ngo Thi Hai (63 years old), residing in Rach Gia ward, said she is very fond of traditional Vietnamese folk music (Don Ca Tai Tu). Hearing that the locality was organizing a Don Ca Tai Tu competition, she went to watch on the opening night. During the performances, it rained, but the performers still performed very well. Many groups invested in elaborate staging and rich content. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a wonderful traditional folk performance live. I hope the locality will organize more competitions and maintain more opportunities for those who love Don Ca Tai Tu to access this art form,” Ms. Hai shared.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Mao, this year's provincial traditional music and singing competition was meticulously prepared and seriously invested in terms of content and artistic quality. From editing and selecting songs, staging techniques, to costumes and artistic dance illustrations… Many performances offered audiences emotionally rich artistic moments, continuing the flow of traditional culture of the homeland. Some units boldly brought young artists to participate, demonstrating the inheritance and development of the local traditional music and singing movement.
The simple melodies and lyrics of traditional folk music continue to resonate daily from local clubs and stages, connecting generations of folk music lovers in An Giang province. It is this strong community bond, pride in the heritage, and practical approaches that breathe life into this traditional art form, ensuring its preservation and spread.
