No one remembers exactly when the craft of basket weaving began in Nam Giang village, only that it has been intertwined with many generations of the local people. Although not as bustling as before, basket weaving is still present in the lives of the people of Nam Giang today.

Having been involved in the craft of bamboo weaving for the past 65 years, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh Chau (born in 1947, Nam Giang village) still vividly remembers the early days when her mother and grandmother taught her by hand. She shared: “I learned this craft when I was 14 years old. Back then, my mother and grandmother guided me through each step, from splitting bamboo and shaping the strips to completing the product. Today, bamboo weaving has become an indispensable part of my life. Every day, sitting and weaving each bamboo strip, I feel happy because I get to relive the memories of my homeland.”

According to Ms. Chau, completing a woven product involves many steps such as selecting materials, splitting bamboo, shaping the strips, and then proceeding with the weaving process.

To create a beautiful and durable product, the craftsman must weave the bamboo strips evenly, ensuring the weave is strong, tight, and balanced. Depending on the type of product, such as baskets, sieves, or other containers, the weaver must adjust the thickness and spacing of the strips and the shaping accordingly. Even a few misaligned or uneven strips can compromise the product's aesthetics, sturdiness, and lifespan.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Quang (Nam Giang village) shared: “To create a beautiful and durable woven product, the selection of raw materials is very important. Bamboo, rattan fibers, etc., must be carefully selected, evenly split, and meticulously processed before being used in weaving. Therefore, although the baskets and sieves look quite simple, each product is the result of the meticulousness, skill, and hard work of the craftsman.”

In the past, the weaving craft flourished, providing a considerable income for the villagers. However, due to changes in lifestyle and the market, the number of households still engaged in the craft has gradually decreased over time. Currently, only about 40 households in the entire village maintain the craft. What worries the artisans here is not only finding a market for their products, but also how to ensure that the traditional craft is preserved and continued by the younger generation.

According to many locals, products such as baskets, sieves, and other similar items are currently sold for prices ranging from tens of thousands to over 100,000 VND per item, depending on size and craftsmanship. Although the economic value is not significant, this remains a source of livelihood that helps many households maintain their traditional craft.
