Looking at Mr. Nhan's agile and resourceful demeanor, along with his professional work style, few would guess that he started this job without any formal training in journalism. In 2009, after graduating with a degree in information technology, Mr. Nhan began working at the Go Quao District Radio Station (formerly). At that time, he was only responsible for purely technical tasks such as operating the station, broadcasting, and repairing loudspeakers... "When I first started, I didn't know how to write news articles. I mainly read newspapers and listened to news broadcasts while on duty, then I experimented and learned to write. When the first news broadcast was aired, I was very happy," Mr. Nhan recalled fondly.
At that time, the district radio station was understaffed, with one person having to handle multiple tasks. Despite lacking formal journalistic training, Nhân never gave up. Through self-learning and perseverance, he proactively explored various filming techniques, photography methods, and news writing skills. His diligence and proactive learning from experience helped him become increasingly confident in his news reporting. Later, he was given the opportunity to participate in training courses to improve his professional skills.
Working in grassroots broadcasting requires dedication and passion; it's difficult to persevere without it. Mr. Nhân sincerely shared that back then, the salaries for those working in this field were very low; his first month's salary was only 530,000 VND. Throughout this long and challenging journey, he never once considered giving up his loudspeaker and paper. It wasn't until 2014 that the income and living conditions of those working in grassroots broadcasting gradually stabilized. Life was full of difficulties and shortages, but when asked how he overcame those challenges, he just smiled and said, "I don't know either, I just know I love the job and want to contribute."
"Finishing the job, not just working until the clock runs out" has long been Nhân's motto. There are days when events are happening continuously in the locality, and he doesn't even have time for lunch; he works tirelessly on Saturdays and Sundays as well. The journey of this grassroots information "soldier" is always intertwined with the footprints he leaves along the paths of villages and hamlets; therefore, the memories of his fieldwork are invaluable to him.
Mr. Nhân vividly remembers a time when he was out reporting during a storm, the roads were muddy, and he had to roll up his pants and walk barefoot for about 3km to reach the area and report on the handover of houses to ethnic minority people. Mr. Nhân shared: “At that time, I wasn’t worried about getting wet, only about my camera getting wet and losing footage for the people.” This sincere sharing perfectly captures the deep appreciation for his profession as a grassroots journalist. Many nights, he stayed up late researching new video editing software, meticulously refining each commentary for his reports, and learning from experience to improve the quality of his media output.
To improve the quality of information, Mr. Nhan initiated a proposal to the leadership to purchase specialized hard drive equipment to build a scientific data storage facility, systematizing all economic, social, and political events and activities in the locality. This valuable resource has become a powerful and effective springboard for the long-term propaganda work of the locality.
On average, Mr. Nhan writes 500-600 news articles and produces about 60 documentaries annually to serve the local information and propaganda work. For him, the greatest reward after years of working in the profession is not the title, but the process of traveling to many grassroots levels, gaining more life experience, accessing many fields, accumulating more knowledge, and expanding his relationships with the people.
Not only did he fulfill his duties locally, Mr. Nhan was also an active contributor, regularly sending news and current affairs articles to the An Giang Provincial Newspaper and Radio-Television, bringing the pulse of local life closer to readers and listeners throughout the province. After the merger, he was assigned to the Vinh Tuy Commune General Service Center, taking on the role of supporting the operation of the commune's electronic information website. In his new work environment, he quickly adapted, continuing to develop his technological skills and keen information acumen.
The loudspeakers of Vinh Tuy commune still regularly broadcast every day. There, news updates and new policies are conveyed to the people in the simplest language. And there, we also hear about the contributions of Mr. Bui Van Nhan to information dissemination at the grassroots level.
