The movement to digitize historical sites and landmarks has been implemented by the youth of Da Nang since 2023, starting with a competition to create video clips titled "Proud of Da Nang" - digitizing historical sites and landmarks in the city. Through the competition, dozens of short video clips introducing historical sites and landmarks were created by youth union members after a period of research and verification of information.
For example, to prepare a video longer than 13 minutes introducing the Ancestral Temple of An Hai Village and Thoai Ngoc Hau, the Son Tra District Youth Union spent many days researching the location. The team filmed, interviewed dignitaries, consulted documents, and connected with the Monument Management Board to cross-reference and supplement images and information. The result was a polished video with historical depth and aesthetic appeal.
Nguyen Ngoc Tran Chau, the narrator of this video, said that the process of making the clip was also an opportunity for her to gain a deeper understanding of the local cultural and historical values, thereby fostering appreciation and a sense of responsibility for preservation. According to Chau, at first she only knew it as a historical site associated with the worship of the village's ancestors and Thoai Ngoc Hau. But through further research, she gained a clearer understanding of the significance and depth of the site's history and culture.
“This place is sacred to the local people and marks the pioneering and land-building stages of our ancestors, especially the contributions of Thoại Ngọc Hầu – a key figure in the formation of the southern region of our country. As a young person, I feel I have a responsibility to spread that value to the community,” Châu expressed.
From their initial experimental clips, young people in Da Nang have gradually improved their skills in gathering materials, editing films, and storytelling to create high-quality and emotionally rich products. More importantly, historical sites and revolutionary landmarks, when presented in a youthful and creative language, have truly spread, becoming an effective bridge between the past and the present. In particular, through the videos, information, and data provided, the Da Nang Youth Union has a basis for creating a digital map of revolutionary landmarks in the city.
Using AI in historical communication and promotion.
According to Le Cong Hung, Secretary of the Da Nang City Youth Union, for each historical site, the affiliated Youth Union branches have actively coordinated with relevant units to develop explanatory and introductory materials, converting them into digital data and integrating them into QR codes in both Vietnamese and English.
Currently, the digital address map is being integrated into the city's shared database system, linked to the education and culture sector's information portal. "The long-term goal is to develop the map into a multi-dimensional interactive tool, integrating virtual reality and augmented reality… so that users can have more experiences when visiting historical sites or participating in interactive games to learn about local history," Mr. Hung shared.
Currently, the Youth Union, in coordination with schools and educational organizations, is incorporating digital maps into extracurricular activities and local history exploration. Many schools have been organizing historical explorations of Da Nang for students by dividing them into groups, researching historical sites using maps, and presenting their findings through video clips and slide presentations. Building on this initial success, the Da Nang City Youth Union plans to expand the project, adding more locations associated with revolutionary movements, volunteer activities, and prominent figures from different periods.
To further spread awareness, the City Youth Union actively trains its members and young people in using AI in promoting local history through media. The training introduces design tools, video editing, image editing, and guides participants on how to leverage artificial intelligence to create voice simulations and virtual scenes, thereby making historical sites more vibrant and engaging for viewers, especially Generation Z.
Ms. Le Thi Lanh, Deputy Head of the Propaganda Department of the Da Nang City Youth Union, believes that applying AI to promoting local history saves time in content production and opens up new creative opportunities, such as automating the creation of bilingual subtitles, detecting historical keywords in videos, or building virtual characters to narrate. "With the support of technology, the 'Red Address' map becomes a creative platform where young people can make films, write stories, and organize mini-games to learn about history in a proactive and exciting way," Ms. Lanh affirmed.
