Google has surprised the tech world by removing the screen from its latest health tracking device. The Fitbit Air, a $99 wearable, is designed to sit comfortably on the wrist and transmit data to Google Health Coach, the company's personalized health care platform.

This device is compact, and everything Google has integrated inside a "pebble." It includes all the usual health sensors, tracking heart rate, blood oxygen levels, sleep stages, and heart rate monitoring with atrial fibrillation alerts.

Because it has no screen that drains the battery, the Fitbit Air can last up to a week on a single charge. Just a five-minute quick charge provides enough power for a full day of use.

Users manage everything through the Google Health app on iOS or Android. The tracker automatically detects common exercises, and the ability to detect exercises becomes more personalized over time.

You can start workouts from the app or even take a picture of a gym whiteboard or treadmill control panel, and Google Health Coach can record that workout for you.

Google's push to develop AI-powered fitness guidance also comes as Apple is reportedly reassessing its own health and fitness coaching ambitions.

Google also positions this device as a companion for Pixel Watch users. Users can wear the Pixel Watch during the day and switch to the Fitbit Air at night while still continuously tracking their health metrics.

Google designed the Fitbit Air in a modular style. The central tracker can be detached from the default recycled fabric strap to attach to various accessories, including the silicone Active Band and the more stylish Elevated Modern Band.

Additionally, there's a special Stephen Curry edition priced at $129.99, featuring a brown and orange strap with an internal embossed pattern designed to improve airflow during high-intensity workouts.

The standard Fitbit Air costs $99.99 and is available for pre-order starting today, including three months of Google Health Premium. The special edition will be available in stores on May 26th.
