According to information from 9to5Google and numerous reports on Reddit, the new restricted mode has been quietly rolled out by Google Maps, with the first responses appearing on February 14th.
The biggest limitation users face when using Google Maps without logging in is the inability to view reviews of places. While star ratings are still available, users will not have access to detailed reviews, photos, and videos shared by others.

Furthermore, information such as crowd levels and relevant locations, like nearby hotels or restaurants, is also missing. Specifically for restaurants, users cannot view menus or know whether the establishment offers dine-in, takeout, or delivery services.
However, some basic features are still retained in a restricted mode, including opening hours, phone number, address, and a link to the official website. Navigation features such as directions still work normally.

A message on the service stated: "You are seeing a restricted view of Google Maps," and provided a link to learn more.
This notification states that the restrictions may be caused by service issues, high traffic, or browser extensions. Google also recommends that users log in to their accounts to avoid encountering this issue in the future.
Although Google hasn't officially confirmed this change, it appears to be a strategy to encourage users to create Google accounts.
According to tests conducted by PCMag reporters, the limited display issue appears on many versions of Google Maps for both mobile and desktop devices.
