This information has been confirmed by reputable sources such as 9to5Google and the Google I/O event website. This is seen as a major step towards bringing NotebookLM to a wider audience on mobile platforms.
NotebookLM, formerly known as Project Tailwind, was first introduced at Google I/O 2023 as a test version in Google Labs. This tool made a strong impression thanks to its ability to synthesize information, link ideas, and support in-depth research. In July 2023, Google began testing NotebookLM with a limited group of users in the US. By December 2024, the premium version, NotebookLM Plus, for businesses was launched, focusing on enhanced security and increased usage limits.
Subsequently, on February 10, 2025, NotebookLM Plus officially expanded to individual users through the Google One AI Premium plan, marking a significant step in Google's strategy to popularize AI technology.
However, until now, NotebookLM has only operated on the web platform. Given the growing demand for a standalone mobile app version, Google announced designs for Android and iPhone on May 2nd, 2025.
According to the announcement, the NotebookLM mobile application will have notable features including: Document management tabs: Recent, Shared, Title, and Downloaded; an Audio Overview feature that allows playing content as audio and downloading it for offline use; and support for uploading and managing content from multiple sources such as PDFs, websites, YouTube videos , and text documents directly from mobile devices.
Previously, on April 7, 2025, Google hinted at the upcoming NotebookLM app with the message "NotebookLM app coming soon." On social media platform X, many users expressed excitement for this mobile version.
The choice of Google I/O 2025 to announce the NotebookLM application demonstrates the increasing importance of this tool in the AI product ecosystem that Google is promoting, and reflects the company's commitment to advancing AI for education and research.
