According to Reuters , Kobakhidze has held the position of chairman of the ruling party since 2021.
He is known for his oratorical skills and for responding to harsh criticism from the West and Ukraine with statements expressing the country's desire to join the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Last month, former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced his resignation to allow his successor time to prepare for the parliamentary elections in October.
Both figures are widely regarded as loyal to billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgia's richest man, former Prime Minister, and founder of the Georgian Dream party.
Polls show that the Georgian Dream remains the most popular party, but has lost ground since 2020, when it only secured a narrow majority in Parliament.
