The new Dutch cabinet was sworn in on February 23 at the Huis Ten Bosch palace in The Hague before King Willem-Alexander, making Rob Jetten, 38, the youngest Prime Minister in the country's history and the first openly gay head of government.

The centrist D66 party, which supports the European Union, won a narrow victory in last October's election, defeating Geert Wilders' far-right Freedom Party (PVV). The snap election was held after the PVV withdrew from the previous ruling coalition.
The new coalition, comprising the D66, CDA, and VVD parties, holds 66 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives, nine seats short of a majority. Despite this, the three parties took only 117 days to reach an agreement to form a government , significantly faster than the 223 days required for the previous coalition.
Following his victory, Jetten declared that populist movements could be defeated if they campaigned with “a positive message for the country.” During the campaign, he emphasized his desire to bring the Netherlands “back to the center of Europe,” arguing that without European cooperation, the country would be weakened. In a manifesto released in January, the alliance pledged full support for Ukraine and full compliance with its defense spending commitments to NATO.
The new Dutch government aims to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035, from the current level of around 2%, through income tax surcharges and adjustments to some welfare policies. Planned measures include limiting unemployment benefits, increasing individual contributions to health insurance, and accelerating the retirement age to align with average life expectancy.
